The maximum duration for a full-time PhD is 3 years (36 months) with an optional submission pending (writing up period) of 12 months.

The research degree

A PhD is the highest academic award for which a student can be registered. This programme allows you to explore and pursue a research project built around a substantial piece of work, which has to show evidence of original contribution to knowledge.

A full time PhD is a three year programme of research and culminates in the production of a large-scale piece of written work in the form of a research thesis that should not normally exceed 80,000 to 100,000 words.

Completing a PhD can give you a great sense of personal achievement and help you develop a high level of transferable skills which will be useful in your subsequent career, as well as contributing to the development of knowledge in your chosen field.

You are expected to work to an approved programme of work including appropriate programmes of postgraduate study (which may be drawn from parts of existing postgraduate courses, final year degree programmes, conferences, seminars, masterclasses, guided reading or a combination of study methods).

You will be appointed a main supervisor who will normally be part of a supervisory team, comprising up to three members to advise and support you on your project.

Entry requirements

The normal level of attainment required for entry is:

  • a Master's degree from a UK University or equivalent, in a discipline appropriate to the proposed programme to be followed, or
  • an upper second class honours degree (2:1) from a UK university in a discipline appropriate to that of the proposed programme to be followed, or
  • appropriate research or professional experience at postgraduate level, which has resulted in published work, written reports or other appropriate evidence of accomplishment.

For applicants whose first language or language of instruction is not English you will need to meet the minimum requirements of an English Language qualification. The minimum of IELTS 6.5 overall with no element lower than 6.0, will be considered acceptable, or equivalent.

Anxiety can be defined as an aversive motivational state that has a detrimental effect on task performance, particularly during demanding situations where the level of threat to the goals of the individual is high. As a consequence, anxiety has adverse effects on cognitive performance in situations which require processing information and which are attentionally demanding. The present project would explore the relationship between anxiety and cognitive performance and in particular working memory tasks such as verbal working memory and visual spatial working memory tasks.

Automated tools that assist the decision making of their users are becoming increasingly sought after in a range of domains, particularly manufacturing. One of the biggest challenges in designing these tools is eliciting or extracting the human knowledge and expertise with which to then input into these tools.

This project will use a mixed methods approach to elicit knowledge from ‘experts’ in certain manufacturing fields, and to ultimately help solve a problem in the manufacturing domain.

The project is aligned to a current EPSRC feasibility project “Feasibility of Capturing Crafts-based Knowledge in an AI System for Future Autonomous Precision-surface Manufacturing” which is evidence that this multi-disciplinary area is likely to be suitable for future grant proposals. It is likely to have significant interest for publishing in at least one area, with an expectation that it will produce three high quality journal papers with strong support from the academic supervisory team.

The candidate should have a strong background in psychology (preferably human factors/applied cognition) and a desire to understand the links with computer science and engineering. The project will be supported by experts from psychology, computer science, and engineering.

Most current conceptualisation of victims of sexual violence portray them as vulnerable, damaged and as in need of psychological intervention. Additionally, most victims of sexual violence are unlikely to achieve a sense of justice through conventional means (ie seeing their offender convicted) and, indeed, some victims may not seek this type of justice. The combination of public conceptualisations of victims and their lack of recourse to justice are potentially problematic and may well have significant implications for the way in which victims survive their experience. Indeed, opportunities for achieving and demonstrating positive survivorship way be thwarted. What are the relationships between victims’ justice needs, experience of survivorship and their long-term psychological wellbeing, and how might each of these issues be better addressed?

When we decide if others are lying or telling the truth, we tend to judge others are telling the truth more often than not. How might we be able to reduce this bias in responding? My main research interests are socio-cognitive development and imagination, specifically imaginary companions (ICs). I am currently investigating whether children with Autism create these entities. I have looked at ICs in terms of culture (Egyptian and English), private speech production, theory of mind, and other various socio-cognitive skills. I am planning to further investigate children’s private speech production longitudinally. Other interests include the development of audio verbal hallucination, early development of language, and developmental correlates of breastfeeding in infancy.

The effect of cognitive workload on physical task performance is not currently clear. Research suggests that performing cognitively demanding tasks impairs performance on some physical tasks but not others. This has implications for sporting performance as well as critical real world occupations (eg police, military, emergency responders). This research will also seek to identify how using increasing levels of technology (eg head-up displays, wearable technology) may impact physical task performance.

Women become mothers within a complex matrix of social and cultural influences which inform ideas about ‘good mothering’ and are important for understanding perinatal wellbeing and distress. Projects in this area would be likely to use qualitative methods to consider how new mothers achieve a positive sense of self which incorporates a secure-enough maternal identity. They may focus on particular groups of mothers or might take a more specific focus including, but not limited to: infant feeding, subjective experience of mother-infant bonding, use of maternity support services and the psychological impact of interventions during childbirth.

Further information

The teaching year normally starts in September with breaks at Christmas and Easter, finishing with a main examination/assessment period around May/June. Timetables are normally available one month before registration. You can study this course on a part-time basis but, as this is a full-time course, you may have to attend every day of the week.

Your course is made up of modules and each module is worth a number of credits. Each year you study modules to the value of 120 credits, adding up to 360 credits in total for a bachelor’s qualification. These credits can come from a combination of core, compulsory and optional modules but please note that optional modules may not run if we do not have enough students interested.

If you achieve 120 credits for the current stage you are at, you may progress to the next stage of your course, subject to any professional, statutory or regulatory body guidelines.
