About the course

Our Bachelor of Science in Business Data Analytics prepares business students with the requisite knowledge, skills and experience to create, analyse and manage data driven initiatives as well as associated business processes to facilitate decision making and large-scale business data analytics in organisations.

The concept and importance of “data analytics” has been known for a while, but the last few years have seen a sizeable swell in interest and media attention. Recently, the ways in which social media companies use the data collected about their users have hit the headlines and has shown the enormous impact data analysis and usage has on our lives every day.

A degree in business data analytics would impart you with important transferable skills, such as data analysis, visualisation, data management, critical-thinking and problem-solving, and open up opportunities across industries as data managers, data consultants, business analysts, consumer and market knowledge managers, chief data officers, big data architects and business and marketing analysts.

The programme is designed to develop both technical and professional skills ¬− technical in terms of data visualisation, database structures, and use of software – and professional skills in terms of the commercialization of designed innovation and organisational decision making. You’ll learn to operate in the spaces between the IT and business disciplines and obtain the skills to both innovate in the new economy and commercialize those innovations.

On completion you’ll possess the capacity to absorb and re-combine knowledge from different disciplines and innovate for the advantage of your organisation.

Companies large or small in today’s modern business environment are reliant on data to help inform strategy, make decisions and identify problems, challenges and opportunities. This is true for both online and offline companies, and the notion that organisations are 'data rich, but skills poor' holds true. The individuals who run these argue that they need graduates who understand and analyse data to make informed business-related decisions. This course can help you do just that, sitting at the intersection between data analytical skills and business decision making.

This is a new and rapidly expanding area of business and for many organisations data sits at the heart of it. This degree will open up opportunities in areas such as business consultancy, management, banking, project management, sales etc. If you want to learn about this subject from an enthusiastic team with industrial experience and academic expertise, then a course in this area could be right for you.

Core modules:

Responsible Business Enterprise

This module will introduce you to ethical and social responsibility issues encountered by contemporary business enterprises. You'll be given the opportunity to develop skills in identifying and addressing business challenges related to social responsibility, and then work in groups to develop viable business solutions which address economic, social and environmental concerns of a business enterprise. This module is part of Huddersfield Business School’s commitment to the United Nations Principles of Responsible Management Education (PRME).

Introductory Quantitative Economics

This module will introduce you to mathematical and statistical methods necessary for the study of economics. The main techniques applicable to the study of modern economic theory will be introduced and where appropriate linked to applied content. Mathematical techniques will be used to allow you to develop your understanding of economic theory. Statistical techniques will be used to allow greater understanding of economic data and applied economics. The module objective is for you to use quantitative techniques and gain an understanding of how these might be useful in theoretical and applied economics, as well as learning something about their limitations.

Introduction to Databases

This module introduces learners to the fundamental concepts involved in the design, implementation and use of relational databases. Learners will develop the skills and knowledge needed to model relational databases based on user requirements, and implement and query databases using a suitable relational database management system (RDBMS) and SQL.

Introduction to Data Analysis

In a world that is increasingly focusing on Big Data and data analysis, being able to analyse data and report the result of data analysis, and interpret it as useful information, is crucial to being a successful IT professional. This module introduces learners to the fundamentals of data analysis using one or more popular industry-standard data analysis tools.

Organisational Behaviour

This module presents and critically explores human behaviour in the workplace from the perspective of the individual, the team and the organisation. Emphasis is placed on developing critical awareness through discussions of theoretical content but also the practical application of ideas to the workplace. The overall objective of the module is to think about different levels of behaviour and to think about the challenges managers face in increasingly competitive and dynamic environments. With vast ranging topics, the module covers individual level topics including personality, individual differences and motivation to more team level concepts including the influence of the social organisation and organisational level topics including leadership, organisational culture and change management. This is all presented with reference to real life examples and topical areas of interest.

Introduction to Business Analytics

In this module you'll understand the importance of data and how managing this data can help organisations to make decisions. This will be achieved through the analysis and identification of various data management techniques and how these methods are used to support organisational innovation and growth. You'll critically apply various data analytical approaches, and look at the various concepts and current prevailing ideas in data management. In addition, you'll investigate some of the key legislative, operational and strategic issues which support the collection and usage of data within a digital business environment. This will be underpinned by looking at both internal and external data sets such as, data.gov.uk and the World Bank.

You will be taught through a series of lectures, seminars, tutorials, workshops, computer aided learning packages, directed study and project work. Assessment will include exams, oral presentations, individual or group essays or reports, case studies, in-class tests, peer assessment, individual reflective learning portfolios, time constrained assignments, group projects and management and marketing projects or dissertations for final year students.

Study time on this course is spent in lectures, seminars, tutorials etc. If you are concerned about adapting to study at university level, then our Learning Development Group, (LDG) based in the Huddersfield Business School building offers a dedicated service helping our students to improve their academic skills in areas such as presentations skills, time-management, academic reading, referencing or academic writing, research for essay preparation and how to prepare effectively for examinations.

Your module specification/course handbook will provide full details of the assessment criteria applying to your course. Feedback (usually written) is normally provided on all coursework submissions within three term time weeks unless the submission was made towards the end of the session in which case feedback would be available on request after the formal publication of results.

Placements


The course offers an optional one-year (48 weeks) work placement after the second year, in the UK or abroad.

If we propose to make a major change to a course that you are holding an offer for, then we will tell you as soon as possible so that you can decide whether to withdraw your application prior to enrolment.

Changes to your course after you enrol as a student

We will always try to deliver your course and other services as described. However, sometimes we may have to make changes as set out below:

Changes to option modules

Where your course allows you to choose modules from a range of options, we will review these each year and change them to reflect the expertise of our staff, current trends in research and as a result of student feedback or demand for certain modules. We will always ensure that you have a range of options to choose from and we will let you know in good time the options available for you to choose for the following year.

Major changes

We will only make major changes to the core curriculum of a course or to our services if it is necessary for us to do so and provided such changes are reasonable. A major change in this context is a change that materially changes the services available to you; or the outcomes, or a significant part, of your course, such as the nature of the award or a substantial change to module content, teaching days (part time provision), classes, type of delivery or assessment of the core curriculum.

For example, it may be necessary to make a major change to reflect changes in the law or the requirements of the University’s regulators; to meet the latest requirements of a commissioning or accrediting body; to improve the quality of educational provision; in response to student, examiners’ or other course evaluators’ feedback; and/or to reflect academic or professional changes within subject areas. Major changes may also be necessary because of circumstances outside our reasonable control, such as a key member of staff leaving the University or being unable to teach, where they have a particular specialism that can’t be adequately covered by other members of staff; or due to damage or interruption to buildings, facilities or equipment.

Major changes would usually be made with effect from the next academic year, but this may not always be the case. We will notify you as soon as possible should we need to make a major change and will carry out suitable consultation with affected students. If you reasonably believe that the proposed change will cause you detriment or hardship we will, if appropriate, work with you to try to reduce the adverse effect on you or find an appropriate solution. Where an appropriate solution cannot be found and you contact us in writing before the change takes effect you can cancel your registration and withdraw from the University without liability to the University for future tuition fees. We will provide reasonable support to assist you with transferring to another university if you wish to do so.

Termination of course

In exceptional circumstances, we may, for reasons outside of our control, be forced to discontinue or suspend your course. Where this is the case, a formal exit strategy will be followed and we will notify you as soon as possible about what your options are, which may include transferring to a suitable replacement course for which you are qualified, being provided with individual teaching to complete the award for which you were registered, or claiming an interim award and exiting the University. If you do not wish to take up any of the options that are made available to you, then you can cancel your registration and withdraw from the course without liability to the University for future tuition fees and you will be entitled to a refund of all course fees paid to date. We will provide reasonable support to assist you with transferring to another university if you wish to do so.

When you enrol as a student of the University, your study and time with us will be governed by a framework of regulations, policies and procedures, which form the basis of your agreement with us. These include regulations regarding the assessment of your course, academic integrity, your conduct (including attendance) and disciplinary procedure, fees and finance and compliance with visa requirements (where relevant). It is important that you familiarise yourself with these as you will be asked to agree to abide by them when you join us as a student.
