Why Events Management with Digital Marketing

Digital, mobile and social media are changing the world and are at the heart of Events Management. The event industry is increasing using digital channels to promote, communicate and engage audiences and enhance the experience of events. Be at the forefront of a dynamic industry by having the practical and technical skills required to drive the success of events. You’ll learn the skills required through practical hands-on application and the academic know how required to succeed in a competitive market.

Using Digital Marketing in Events?

Attention to detail, creativity, good communication, being organised, problem solving and constantly striving for excellence are some of the skills required. You'll find out how social media, web and app design, augmented reality and video design can be used as a marketing and engagement platform for all types of events ( Weddings to Conferences, Sporting Events to Cultural Celebrations, Charity Fundraisers to Marketing Campaigns). How will you learn?

You will learn through practical application and creatively delivered lectures, workshops, seminars and group work sessions. Coordinating your own event as part of assessment in each year Working with external clients to create events concepts and marketing content Projects include producing, directing and editing videos to designing, costing and implementing websites and apps Volunteering on events throughout the year (e.g. NCRI in Liverpool, CHS in Leeds, Chester Food & Culture Festival). Industry software training used in search engine optimisation (SEO) and communication analytics Attending field trips Future focused subjects delivered by lecturers who have worked in the industry or who are currently conducting cutting edge research in the field Industry experts delivering guest lectures

What subjects will you cover?

You’ll explore subjects such as operations and project management, health and safety mitigation, digital strategies, financial planning and budgeting, marketing and consumer behaviour, content creation through blogs, apps and social media, measuring engagement through analytics. Event evaluation and impact measurement and business management.

Events Management is an exciting career prospect for someone that likes a challenge, works to deadlines, and is good at problem solving.  Your confidence in these skill sets will grow year on year throughout the course through the model of learning, critical thinking and practical application that our course is designed around.  The industry itself is diverse, dynamic and international offering exciting opportunities to our placement students and graduates.  One of the huge leaps between studying at School/College to studying a degree at University is the level of independent learning required, you will fill your time with reading, research and seeking experiences that will help you understand the subjects taught in the class.  My main piece of advice would be to pick a subject that you are going to find interesting, that is going to excite you and keep you inspired to learn for your 4 years at University and continually develop as a young professional upon graduation.

Core modules:

Events Industry Studies

The aim of this module is to introduce you to the events industry and give a general overview of how the industry works and what factors impact the sector. We will look at the main demand generating sources of events such as Business, Tourism, Leisure, Art, Sport, Music, Entertainment and Culture. You'll research about future trends in the industry which should help you to identify future potential opportunities with the Events Management market. In addition this module explores in detail different types of events and sectors within the industry. This module really is the foundation stone to the course.

Events Operations Management

This module is designed to introduce you to the key components of events. This will include the organisational and management issues involved in staging events. The module will focus on venue selection, contracts, health and safety, licensing, public safety and security. You’ll have the opportunity to gain knowledge of organisation, planning, managing and controlling specific types of events and includes the organisation, management and implementation of a live event.

Principles of Marketing

This module will develop your understanding of the principles and practice of contemporary marketing management. You will be introduced to the key concepts and tools of marketing including analysis, planning, implementation and control. The assessment comprises an individual assignment (worth 30% of module marks) and an end of year examination (worth 70% of module marks).

Professional Skills and Finance

This module has two components. In the first term you’ll be given an opportunity to develop the personal and professional skills needed to be an effective hospitality manager. These include report writing, presentation skills, information retrieval and team working skills. The second term is an introduction to essential accounting concepts that you’ll need in order to feel confident about managing a business.

Digital Marketing in the Contemporary World

This module is designed to introduce students to digital marketing. It focuses on all aspects of the domain (i.e., B2B, B2C, Service, etc). It keeps the students at the forefront of modern practices: bridging the gap between theory and its practical application. Students will use a variety of digital marketing tools and platforms to design, manage, and optimise campaigns. The module is for students who are interested in developing digital marketing skills.

Brands and Branding

The aim of the module is to introduce and help develop knowledge of brands and branding to you and the theories and processes that are critical to developing effective brands messages. The module will explore current trends in branding, and the functional and symbolic value of brands. It aims to provide you with a thorough grounding in branding, and to provide a platform for advanced branding modules.

Organisations and People

The module will introduce you to the characteristics of organisations and explore how they operate and what influences them. The structures, operations and management aspects of organisations will be analysed. The specific behaviour of people at work will also be examined in order to understand their motivations. Whilst some of the theories of management styles will be discussed, emphasis will be placed on developing your personal skills with regard to key business activities.

Modern Language

Two options from a variety of modern foreign language modules can be chosen from the available range and entry levels appropriate to the student’s prior experience and knowledge. We currently offer French, German, and Spanish.

You will be taught through a series of lectures, seminars, tutorials, field trips, practical workshops, off campus facilities such as theatres and professional kitchens. Assessment will include formal written coursework, exams, assessed live events, presentations and design and CAD projects.

20% of the study time on this course is spent in lectures, seminars, tutorials etc.

If you are concerned about adapting to study at university level, then our Learning Development Group, (LDG) based in the Huddersfield Business School building offers a dedicated service helping our students to improve their academic skills in areas such as presentations skills, time-management, academic reading, referencing or academic writing, research for essay preparation and how to prepare effectively for examinations.

Feedback (usually written) is normally provided on all coursework submissions within three term time weeks unless the submission was made towards the end of the session in which case feedback would be available on request after the formal publication of results. Feedback on exam performance/final coursework is available on request after the publication of results.

Changes to option modules

Where your course allows you to choose modules from a range of options, we will review these each year and change them to reflect the expertise of our staff, current trends in research and as a result of student feedback or demand for certain modules. We will always ensure that you have a range of options to choose from and we will let you know in good time the options available for you to choose for the following year.

Major changes

We will only make major changes to the core curriculum of a course or to our services if it is necessary for us to do so and provided such changes are reasonable. A major change in this context is a change that materially changes the services available to you; or the outcomes, or a significant part, of your course, such as the nature of the award or a substantial change to module content, teaching days (part time provision), classes, type of delivery or assessment of the core curriculum.

For example, it may be necessary to make a major change to reflect changes in the law or the requirements of the University’s regulators; to meet the latest requirements of a commissioning or accrediting body; to improve the quality of educational provision; in response to student, examiners’ or other course evaluators’ feedback; and/or to reflect academic or professional changes within subject areas. Major changes may also be necessary because of circumstances outside our reasonable control, such as a key member of staff leaving the University or being unable to teach, where they have a particular specialism that can’t be adequately covered by other members of staff; or due to damage or interruption to buildings, facilities or equipment.

Major changes would usually be made with effect from the next academic year, but this may not always be the case. We will notify you as soon as possible should we need to make a major change and will carry out suitable consultation with affected students. If you reasonably believe that the proposed change will cause you detriment or hardship we will, if appropriate, work with you to try to reduce the adverse effect on you or find an appropriate solution. Where an appropriate solution cannot be found and you contact us in writing before the change takes effect you can cancel your registration and withdraw from the University without liability to the University for future tuition fees. We will provide reasonable support to assist you with transferring to another university if you wish to do so.

Termination of course

In exceptional circumstances, we may, for reasons outside of our control, be forced to discontinue or suspend your course. Where this is the case, a formal exit strategy will be followed and we will notify you as soon as possible about what your options are, which may include transferring to a suitable replacement course for which you are qualified, being provided with individual teaching to complete the award for which you were registered, or claiming an interim award and exiting the University. If you do not wish to take up any of the options that are made available to you, then you can cancel your registration and withdraw from the course without liability to the University for future tuition fees and you will be entitled to a refund of all course fees paid to date. We will provide reasonable support to assist you with transferring to another university if you wish to do so.

When you enrol as a student of the University, your study and time with us will be governed by a framework of regulations, policies and procedures, which form the basis of your agreement with us. These include regulations regarding the assessment of your course, academic integrity, your conduct (including attendance) and disciplinary procedure, fees and finance and compliance with visa requirements (where relevant).
