About the course

Dynamic, fast paced and international, the hospitality industry is a thriving business sector offering you plenty of exciting career opportunities. This course is designed to prepare you for a management career in world-class hotels, country clubs, theme parks, leisure centres, exhibition venues or catering services.

The course is designed around what the hospitality industry wants, ensuring that you are in the best possible position to go directly into challenging and rewarding positions within multinational organisations nationally or globally.

We offer field trips and a placement year to give you the chance to work in hospitality during your studies.

You’ll be taught by lecturers who have experience in the industry, who’ll help you explore areas of finance, marketing, human resources and operations management alongside hospitality specific options such as venue selection, contracts, health and safety, licensing, public safety and security alongside principles of strategic management and how it is applied to industry practice. You could also study how to minimise risks, how to get sponsorship and how to fund events. And we’ll look at the technology that companies use in staging and marketing events too.

During your studies we’ll give you the opportunity to take a placement with a business, either in the UK or abroad. Previous students have undertaken placements in companies like Marriott, Fairmont Hotels and Resorts, Hilton, White Lodgings, De Vere and Park Plaza as well as Greenwich Country Club in Connecticut, Broken Sound Club in Florida and Ovolo in Hong Kong.

Year 1 includes fundamental management modules

Core modules:

Markets and Marketing

This module explores the behaviour of markets and the responses of organisations through their marketing activities. It will help you to develop an understanding of marketing theory and practice and help you to develop the skills to produce a well-researched marketing plan.

Behavioural Approaches to Work and Society

This module analyses the sociological, psychological and cultural influences on people in organisations and the ways in which these factors affect how organisations function and operate. You’ll explore the role of the manager and the theories and frameworks that support managers.

Professional Skills and Finance

This module has two components. In the first term you’ll be given an opportunity to develop the personal and professional skills needed to be an effective hospitality manager. These include report writing, presentation skills, information retrieval and team working skills. The second term is an introduction to essential accounting concepts that you’ll need in order to feel confident about managing a business.

Events Catering

This module gives you information about food and beverage preparation, service methods and skills for specific events. You’ll be exposed to a variety of commodities, cooking methods, equipment, working practices and service styles and how to apply them in a practical situation. Throughout the module an awareness of financial analysis will be required. Food and beverage management will consider the operational aspects involved in food and beverage production and service systems. This module will investigate the key areas that will be necessary for you to consider when planning and operating within a catering operation practical.

Fundamentals of Tourism

This module will introduce you to the fundamental concepts and principles relating to the study of tourism and the tourist industry. The nature of tourism will be explored through an analysis of definitions, trends, market characteristics, determinants and motivations, product development, and an outline of the main industry sectors. The development of tourism will be analysed in the context of its history, macro-environment and the economic, social, cultural and environmental impacts that it imparts. Principles of sustainable tourism development will be introduced.

Wedding Business Management

This module will give you the opportunity to gain skills and competencies required to understand and successfully manage weddings. You’ll develop knowledge of the wedding market and the cultural and religious diversity which exist within the sector. You’ll have the opportunity to develop an appreciation of the various legal, health and safety implications for catering for outdoor and large scale events and an understanding of client requirements and financial management of the client budget. You’ll prepare a business plan for a wedding planning company and also produce a client portfolio to be delivered in a presentation.

Or, Modern Language

Two options from a variety of modern foreign language modules can be chosen from the available range and entry levels appropriate to the student’s prior experience and knowledge. We currently offer French, German, and Spanish.

You will be taught through a series of seminars, lectures, workshops, live business case studies and field trips. In addition cutting edge E-learning in the form of the flipped classroom means that lectures are enhanced by directed private study. Students are provided with a selection of material such as notes and screen casts produced by the module tutors, and videos, journal articles and book chapters from third parties. Students complete a questionnaire on the material, to reflect upon the areas where they feel there are gaps in their understanding with the responses then informing the content of classroom sessions. This flexible and responsive method is popular with students and has seen an increase in grades achieved. Assessment will include exams, oral presentations, individual or group essays or reports, case studies, in-class tests, peer assessment, individual reflective learning portfolios, time constrained assignments, group projects and management and marketing projects or dissertations for final year students.

If you are concerned about adapting to study at university level, then our Learning Development Group, (LDG) based in the Huddersfield Business School building offers a dedicated service helping our students to improve their academic skills in areas such as presentations skills, time-management, academic reading, referencing or academic writing, research for essay preparation and how to prepare effectively for examinations.

Feedback (usually written) is normally provided on all coursework submissions within three term time weeks unless the submission was made towards the end of the session in which case feedback would be available on request after the formal publication of results. Feedback on exam performance/final coursework is available on request after the publication of results.

Placements


The course offers an optional one-year (48 weeks) work placement after the second year, in the UK or abroad.

Huddersfield Business School’s Placement Unit won the National Undergradute Employability (NUE) award in 2017 for ‘Best University Placement Service’ for their hard work and innovative ideas.

Our Placement Office works with national and international employers to ensure excellent work experience opportunities are available to you on placement courses as well as giving advice in areas such as interview skills and preparing CVs and covering letters.

Changes to option modules

Where your course allows you to choose modules from a range of options, we will review these each year and change them to reflect the expertise of our staff, current trends in research and as a result of student feedback or demand for certain modules. We will always ensure that you have a range of options to choose from and we will let you know in good time the options available for you to choose for the following year.

Major changes

We will only make major changes to the core curriculum of a course or to our services if it is necessary for us to do so and provided such changes are reasonable. A major change in this context is a change that materially changes the services available to you; or the outcomes, or a significant part, of your course, such as the nature of the award or a substantial change to module content, teaching days (part time provision), classes, type of delivery or assessment of the core curriculum.

For example, it may be necessary to make a major change to reflect changes in the law or the requirements of the University’s regulators; to meet the latest requirements of a commissioning or accrediting body; to improve the quality of educational provision; in response to student, examiners’ or other course evaluators’ feedback; and/or to reflect academic or professional changes within subject areas. Major changes may also be necessary because of circumstances outside our reasonable control, such as a key member of staff leaving the University or being unable to teach, where they have a particular specialism that can’t be adequately covered by other members of staff; or due to damage or interruption to buildings, facilities or equipment.

Major changes would usually be made with effect from the next academic year, but this may not always be the case. We will notify you as soon as possible should we need to make a major change and will carry out suitable consultation with affected students. If you reasonably believe that the proposed change will cause you detriment or hardship we will, if appropriate, work with you to try to reduce the adverse effect on you or find an appropriate solution. Where an appropriate solution cannot be found and you contact us in writing before the change takes effect you can cancel your registration and withdraw from the University without liability to the University for future tuition fees. We will provide reasonable support to assist you with transferring to another university if you wish to do so.

Termination of course

In exceptional circumstances, we may, for reasons outside of our control, be forced to discontinue or suspend your course. Where this is the case, a formal exit strategy will be followed and we will notify you as soon as possible about what your options are, which may include transferring to a suitable replacement course for which you are qualified, being provided with individual teaching to complete the award for which you were registered, or claiming an interim award and exiting the University. If you do not wish to take up any of the options that are made available to you, then you can cancel your registration and withdraw from the course without liability to the University for future tuition fees and you will be entitled to a refund of all course fees paid to date. We will provide reasonable support to assist you with transferring to another university if you wish to do so.

When you enrol as a student of the University, your study and time with us will be governed by a framework of regulations, policies and procedures, which form the basis of your agreement with us. These include regulations regarding the assessment of your course, academic integrity, your conduct (including attendance) and disciplinary procedure, fees and finance and compliance with visa requirements (where relevant). It is important that you familiarise yourself with these as you will be asked to agree to abide by them when you join us as a student.
