This course is aimed at all healthcare professionals wishing to gain a recognised teaching qualification. It explores teaching and learning theory and practice within a national and international context. This will enable you to develop your knowledge, skills and abilities related to evidence-based learning and teaching and assessment.

  • There are opportunities to develop and enhance integration of scholarship, research and professional activities in relation to teaching and supporting learning through your demonstration of teaching hours.
  • You will be taught by a team of passionate academics who have a wealth of skills, expertise and professional credibility. Keynote speakers will also contribute to the course to enhance your learning.
  • Through continuing professional development processes, you will be supported to reflect on and continue to develop your current and ongoing knowledge, skills and competence as an educator. It also provides a medium for recording your progress, creating an effective professional portfolio and may be used to update your personal portfolio linked to professional body requirements. As well as helping you to achieve your individual career aspirations whilst ensuring quality provision for learners under your supervision.

Entry Requirements

  • Applicants must hold an Honours degree (2:2 or above) or equivalent.
  • Applicants must be a Registered Healthcare Professional.

If your first language is not English, you will need to meet the minimum requirements of an English Language qualification. The minimum for IELTS is 6.5 overall with no element lower than 6.0, or equivalent. What will you learn?

Course Details

In this module you will study theories related to learning, teaching and assessment applicable to health professional educators and teachers. You will explore major learning theories such as behaviourism, cognitivism and humanism amongst others, and will have the opportunity to apply a variety of teaching approaches within a peer group setting.

This module aims to provide you with the opportunity to explore and develop your knowledge and understanding of current approaches to assessment. You will be supported to develop your role as a critical reflective practitioner and teacher in this area by undertaking and critically evaluating the purposes and methods of assessment. In addition, you will critically review and debate implications for education and training in relation to the developing academic, vocational and professional qualification structures.

You will be provided with the opportunity to further develop your teaching skills in a variety of academic and practice settings. You will be required to complete and negotiate a teaching practice experience, providing the opportunity for you to explore the interface of theory and practice critically, thus enabling you to be involved in managing and critically evaluating teaching and learning approaches.

This module provides the opportunity to develop a working project proposal related to your course outcomes or place of work, facilitated with learning materials and procedural guidance made available electronically. You will attend lectures and have access to supervision with a subject specialist or researcher in the field.

Plus a further 60 credits from the School's postgraduate provision.

The MSc comprises 60 optional credits, enabling experienced and practicing clinicians to select modules relevant to their area of practice, or where appropriate, to apply APEL credits from previous Level 7 study. For new graduates and registrants not currently working in a clinical environment, to ensure appropriate learning opportunities aligned to module learning outcomes, we recommend the following modules:

In this module, practitioners within, or aspiring to, a leadership role will have the opportunity to further develop knowledge of leadership and management theories and strategies, enabling you to ethically manage people and resources and effect change. You will explore how services are developed and commissioned and evaluate the role of the leader lobbying and influencing change in the care arena.

This module provides the opportunity to develop knowledge, appropriate attitudes and the necessary skills to implement a service improvement project, related to your course outcomes and/or place of work. The learning approach will enable you to evidence learning through the application of improvement theories, approaches and evidence based practice facilitated with learning materials and procedural guidance made available electronically. Self-reflection on leadership skills will be integral to the learning process.

Placements

All students are required to complete 180 teaching practice hours. In order to achieve this you will be required to access teaching and learning opportunities in practice and Higher Education. This will be facilitated through negotiation and under supervision of an academic supervisor.
