About the course

This course provides the opportunity for newly qualified social workers (NQSWs) to develop the skills, competencies and confidence required for practice. Through a structured programme of teaching and learning opportunities you will consider and develop an understanding of your professional social work practice within a working environment.

  • The course will assist you in gaining the underpinning knowledge required to meet the Chief Social Workers’ Knowledge and Skills Statements for Social Work.
  • It provides you with an opportunity to demonstrate capability within the context of the Professional Capability Framework endorsed by the Department of Health and associated bodies.
  • It allows you to evidence your continued professional development and demonstrate competence at Assessment and Supported Year in Employment (ASYE) in association with the requirements of the social work regulatory body.

Teaching and assessment

You will be taught through a series of seminars, lectures and workshops. Your studies will be supported by the University’s virtual learning environment.

Assessment will include the submission of a portfolio. Your module specification/course handbook will provide full details of the assessment criteria applying to your course.

Feedback (usually written) is normally provided on all coursework submissions within three term time weeks – unless the submission was made towards the end of the session in which case feedback would be available on request after the formal publication of results.

Entry requirements

You must be a newly qualified Social Worker registered with Social Work England and be in the first two years of employment in a Social Work role.

If your first language is not English, you will need to meet the minimum requirements of an English Language qualification. The minimum for IELTS is 6.0 overall with no element lower than 5.5, or equivalent. Read more about the University’s entry requirements for students outside of the UK on our International Entry Requirements page.
