What will you learn?

Course Details

You will study the following modules:

This module looks at two key parts of leadership - influence and motivation. You'll explore how leaders use influence and how motivation shows up in the people they lead. The module starts with key ideas around power and influence, then moves on to different theories of motivation. At the heart of this module is understanding how these two elements work together in real leadership situations.

This module looks at what makes educational leadership unique within the wider world of leadership. You’ll start by exploring the basic concept, then move on to key leadership theories that are especially relevant in education - going into more depth than most other modules. You’ll also examine elements such as professionalism and what it means to be a professional in an educational setting. From there, you’ll look at different leadership roles in schools and other learning environments, before finishing with a focus on instructional leadership - an approach that brings together many of the key ideas covered throughout the module.

This module lays the foundations for the rest of the course. Focusing on leadership in theory, you'll explore overall definitions of leadership and examine the different ways people understand and approach it. While the focus isn't specifically on education, many of the examples come from educational settings.

This module provides you with the research skills needed to complete your final assignment. You'll be introduced to both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies and inductive and deductive analyses. The module also examines conceptual frameworks such as phenomenology.

This module looks at how learning and development connects to organisational goals and wider HR practices in different settings. You’ll explore how learning and development plans are shaped by policies, roles, and responsibilities, and learn how to identify development needs using different strategies and methods. You’ll also look at how finances, technology, and people support learning and development and why it’s important to link learning policies with what the organisation wants to achieve. You’ll learn through an action learning approach, using case studies to put your knowledge into practice.

This module explores the impact AI has on an organisations structure and how this affects leadership styles and practices. You’ll start by defining intelligence and AI, before examining how AI is used in everyday life and where it’s heading. You’ll consider the opportunities and risks AI presents, including why some resist its adoption. You'll also look at how leadership needs to adapt in response - particularly in hybrid organisations where humans and AI work together. You’ll explore the skills leaders need to navigate these changes and apply leadership concepts to real-world case studies.

This module explores how leadership can drive social justice. You’ll begin by examining the concepts of social justice and ‘social justice leadership’ and then apply these ideas to real-world examples. Following this, you will analyse these examples in more depth before developing a case study of your own choice.

In this module, you’ll explore a topic of interest that’s linked to your course. You’ll plan and carry out your own research or professional project, building on what you’ve learned so far. This will involve reviewing relevant literature, choosing and explaining an appropriate research approach, and evaluating your findings. You’ll then present your work in a way that’s ready to be shared with others.
