About this course

Overview

Why choose Huddersfield for this course?

  • Opportunities to collaborate with students from other Architecture courses, mirroring professional practice and helping you develop essential skills.
  • Top in Yorkshire for student experience and top 10 in the UK for teaching (NSS 2025).
  • Gain skills in digital tools and innovative methods to balance compliance, quality, cost, and sustainability while meeting client and industry needs.

If you’re analytical, detail-oriented, and motivated by solving complex building challenges, our BSc (Hons) Building Surveying course is an excellent route into a professional career shaping, safeguarding, and improving the built environment.

We are actively preparing submissions to the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) for accreditation. The curriculum has been designed in alignment with the RICS professional requirements and CIOB education frameworks, helping to position graduates strongly as they progress toward chartered status through the appropriate professional pathways.

You’ll learn how to advise on the design and construction of new buildings, alterations, and additions, with particular emphasis on regulatory compliance. You’ll also develop expertise in building pathology to diagnose defects and recommend maintenance, repair, retrofit, and conservation strategies for existing assets. From feasibility and condition surveys to contract administration and stakeholder communication, you’ll gain the practical, analytical, and ethical grounding needed to deliver safe, sustainable, and high quality outcomes for clients and communities.

You’ll study alongside students from Architecture, Architectural Technology, Quantity Surveying, and Construction Project Management, experiencing how multidisciplinary teams collaborate on real projects. This approach mirrors professional practice and strengthens your teamworking, communication, negotiation, and leadership skills across the full construction process.

Our facilities in the Barbara Hepworth Building are exceptional — and so is the access and support you’ll receive to make the most of them. You’ll be taught and guided by experienced professionals who understand what it takes to succeed in today’s construction industry.

In the National Student Survey 2025, Building is ranked top in Yorkshire for learning opportunities, assessment and feedback, academic support, learning resources and organisation and management—and top 10 in the UK for teaching on my course and student voice.

By the time you graduate, you’ll have the skills, confidence and professional credibility to take your next steps towards chartered status and a successful career.
