The Information Systems Management MSc (Distance Learning) at Huddersfield prepares you to combine technical understanding with management and leadership capability, developing the skills needed to connect technology, data and organisational strategy.

On this 100% online, flexible part-time conversion course, you will explore how information systems are analysed, designed, implemented and managed to support organisational goals. You will study key computing-focused topics such as software engineering, generative AI and prompt engineering, data mining, data visualisation and business intelligence, alongside management-focused areas including organisational strategy, managerial effectiveness, strategic management and information management. This combination will help you understand how technology, strategy, data and organisational processes work together to enable effective digital transformation.

A distinctive feature of the MSc is its focus on bridging the gap between business and technology. You will develop both technical understanding and the strategic perspective needed to evaluate how information systems support organisational performance, change and innovation.

Entry Requirements

Entry requirements for this course are normally:

  • A BSc, BEng or BA Honours degree (2:2 or above) or equivalent professional qualification in any subject.
  • Other appropriate professional qualifications and/or experience will be considered on an individual basis.

If your first language is not English, you will need to meet the minimum requirements of an English Language qualification. The minimum for IELTS is 6.0 with a minimum score of 6.0 in writing and a minimum of 5.5 in any single component or Duolingo English certificate, score 105 or above. Course Details

This module focuses on the fundamentals of why organisations exist and what organisations and managers ‘do.’ You will learn core aspects of management including strategic decision making, marketing, accounting and finance, and operations. Developing a high-level overview of the organisational landscape, you’ll build the skills required for modern management.

In this introduction to strategic management theories and their practical application, you’ll learn to implement and evaluate strategy. Topics covered include mission and goal formation, stakeholder theories, corporate governance and business ethics. By the end of this module, you’ll be equipped with a strategy toolbox that includes external and internal analysis, corporate level and business level strategies, and a range of decision making approaches.

Organisational leadership requires the support of strategic information to make decisions that align with institutional objectives. In this module you will critically explore and evaluate the leadership opportunities presented by access to strategic information within an organisation. You will study a range of approaches to managing strategic information at scale, and you will develop knowledge that demonstrates your critical understanding of the impact of both traditional and emerging approaches and issues to managing strategic information.

With ever-increasing advancements in Internet-of-Things, Cyber-Physical Systems, and social media applications, vast and complex datasets are generated daily. Visually analysing these datasets enables the transformation of raw data into meaningful insights that support strategic decision-making. The key challenge lies in designing and interacting with effective visual artefacts and dashboards that simplify complex analytical problems without exposing underlying technical complexities. This module provides core knowledge and a deep understanding of the theories, principles, and best practices underpinning data visualisation and business intelligence. You will develop practical skills in designing, developing, and interpreting interactive visualisation dashboards and BI reports using state-of-the-art tools and techniques. You will engage in hands-on exercises addressing real-world big data challenges through visual analysis, focusing on transforming analytical outputs into actionable intelligence. Topics include exploratory data visualisation, visualisation dashboards, interactive 2D and 3D visualisation toolkits, and the application of visualisation methods within specific business and analytical domains.

This module will focus on examining algorithm development and software engineering. You will study programming fundamentals, object-oriented programming and genericity. You will consider algorithms, data structures and programming paradigms that enable efficient implementation, while covering persistence and concurrency. You will analyse issues associated with software engineering project development and examine practices, procedures, techniques and tools designed to address these issues. You will also explore the advent of modern AI-assisted coding paradigms. In covering these topics, the module will examine the issues that software programmers and developers face every day in their quest to develop successful technology systems and applications.

This module enables you to independently undertake a project based on a problem of your own choosing. Designed to be integrative, the project serves as a culmination of the knowledge, skills, competencies and experiences you've gained throughout your studies, while also encouraging further development in these areas. As the project is student-led, you will take ownership of the project from start to finish — negotiating agreements, managing communications, and collaborating effectively with all stakeholders at each stage. In addition, the module offers a comprehensive overview of the research process, academic writing, and key professional considerations including legal, ethical and social issues. It also supports your career development by exploring employability pathways and professional growth.
