This course is designed for health professionals working in emergency care who want to build specialist skills and gain academic recognition for their experience. It supports your clinical development, strengthens your leadership abilities and helps you take the next step in your career.

Informed by the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) National Curriculum and Framework for Emergency Nursing, our course gives you a strong foundation for caring for people of all ages and with conditions affecting every body system. You’ll explore areas unique to emergency care, including major incident management, emergency care for children and young people, minor injury management and emergency mental health. The initial assessment and treatment of acutely ill adults is also a core focus.

Themes such as medicines management and safeguarding run throughout, helping you apply safe and effective practice in fast-paced settings.

You’ll learn alongside colleagues from a range of disciplines, with opportunities for simulation-based learning that build teamwork, confidence and critical decision-making.

Who can apply?

Entry Requirements

Have an honours degree at 2:2 or above or can demonstrate appropriate knowledge and skills at honours degree standard. We will consider other qualifications and experience on an individual case basis.

You must be a health or social care practitioner, registered with a professional body such as the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) or the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).

Currently working in an emergency care setting and have at least 12 months post-registration employment.

What will you learn?

Course Details

This module provides you with an opportunity to enhance your knowledge and understanding of the emergency care in special circumstances and with vulnerable groups for example children or older people. Emphasis throughout the module will be placed on the holistic assessment of the vulnerable individual/group with development of subsequent management plans from which to provide optimum care.

This module provides you with the opportunity to enhance your knowledge and understanding of the pathophysiological effects of acute illness or traumatic injury along with the examination of current evidence and developments in this field of care. Emphasis throughout the module will be placed on the holistic assessment of the individual with development of subsequent management plans from which to provide optimum care.

Placements

You will be required to undertake practice based learning and assessment, which will normally be within your own emergency care setting. However, if there are core competencies that are not achievable you will need to arrange alternative settings which will allow you to meet these.

Fees and Finance

£1,544 per 30 credit module

This is the tuition fee for 2026/27 entry. Tuition fees for 2027/28 will be published once the information becomes available.
