Overview

Why choose Huddersfield for this course?

  • Opportunities to collaborate with students from other Architecture courses, mirroring professional practice and helping you develop essential skills.
  • Top in Yorkshire for student experience and top 10 in the UK for teaching (NSS 2025).
  • Gain skills in digital tools and innovative methods to balance compliance, quality, cost, and sustainability while meeting client and industry needs.

If you’re analytical, detail-oriented, and motivated by solving complex building challenges, our BSc (Hons) Building Surveying course is an excellent route into a professional career shaping, safeguarding, and improving the built environment.

We are actively preparing submissions to the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) for accreditation. The curriculum has been designed in alignment with the RICS professional requirements and CIOB education frameworks, helping to position graduates strongly as they progress toward chartered status through the appropriate professional pathways.

You’ll learn how to advise on the design and construction of new buildings, alterations, and additions, with particular emphasis on regulatory compliance. You’ll also develop expertise in building pathology to diagnose defects and recommend maintenance, repair, retrofit, and conservation strategies for existing assets. From feasibility and condition surveys to contract administration and stakeholder communication, you’ll gain the practical, analytical, and ethical grounding needed to deliver safe, sustainable, and high quality outcomes for clients and communities.

You’ll study alongside students from Architecture, Architectural Technology, Quantity Surveying, and Construction Project Management, experiencing how multidisciplinary teams collaborate on real projects. This approach mirrors professional practice and strengthens your teamworking, communication, negotiation, and leadership skills across the full construction process.

Our facilities in the Barbara Hepworth Building are exceptional — and so is the access and support you’ll receive to make the most of them. You’ll be taught and guided by experienced professionals who understand what it takes to succeed in today’s construction industry.

Building at the University of Huddersfield is ranked 9th in the UK in the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2026. In the National Student Survey 2025, Building is ranked top in Yorkshire for learning opportunities, assessment and feedback, academic support, learning resources and organisation and management — and top 10 in the UK for teaching on my course and student voice.

By the time you graduate, you’ll have the skills, confidence and professional credibility to take your next steps towards chartered status and a successful career.

What will you learn?

Course Details

This module will introduce the overall construction business to you. The content is structured into three distinctive, but interrelated areas, namely, business at industry level, business at project level and business at individual level.

The aim of this module is to provide an introduction to the principles and practices of building technology, digital technologies, communication and representation in the context of architecture and construction. This module consists of four parallel strands: Structures; Buildings Fabric Design; Environmental Design and Digital Communication.

This module aims at introducing students to practices in the design and construction of facilities in the Built Environment. It focuses on the practical application of materials, components and systems to small-scale structures and buildings. It also provides you with an opportunity to apply technology to the design process along with developing understanding of the importance of architectural detailing in conjunction with appropriate construction methods. The module will facilitate the development of presentation skills in all forms from spoken presentations at tutorials to the preparation of suitable drawings and models of carefully detailed components. You will be encouraged to integrate practical, technical and theoretical skills from adjacent modules.

In this module, you will be given an introduction to the legal framework and approaches associated with the conservation of buildings. The module will introduce the causes and nature of building defects likely to occur in a range of contemporary and traditional buildings. Supplemented by a substantial amount of background reading, you will develop the skills needed to understand problematic material-based issues that arise in various types of construction.

The aim of the module is to provide you with an opportunity to work in multi-disciplinary teams and enable you to perform tasks related to your discipline (Architectural Technology-AT/ Construction Project Management-CPM/ Quantity Surveying-QS/ Building Surveying-BS) in the context of a team-based project. It offers you the experience of team working and the multi-disciplinary nature of Built Environment (BE) projects. The project will allow you to practise and further develop both discipline-specific and generic key skills required by a Built Environment professional and encourage self-reflection and enable you to further develop a personal development plan that aligns your learning needs and career aspirations and the requirements of professional institutions.

This module gives you a deep dive into building pathology—the science of why buildings develop problems and how to fix them. You’ll learn how to identify and diagnose defects, measure and record issues accurately, and evaluate the best repair options. You’ll also explore strategies that keep buildings safe, sustainable, and up to professional standards. You’ll gain insight into legal and regulatory requirements, including fire safety compliance, and learn how to carry out condition surveys—essential skills for effective building inspections.

The placement year is your chance to gain hands-on experience and build on the skills you’ve developed in your first two years of study. You’ll spend up to 48 weeks (minimum 36 weeks) in a graduate-level role, sharpening your professional skills, exploring career options, and boosting your future job prospects. During your placement, you'll reflect on your performance, develop real-world skills, and learn to approach your role with a critical eye. Your placement will be monitored, and you’ll be assessed on your achievements, setting you up for success in your final year and beyond.

The Portfolio Sandwich Year module provides a flexible and tailored approach to professional development. It allows you to create a customised portfolio of graduate-level opportunities if your career aspirations don’t align with a traditional sandwich year placement. This module will help you develop a diverse and adaptable skillset, build professional networks, and enhance your career readiness through a mix of structured and self-directed activities.

In this module you will consolidate the prior learning in technical, professional and managerial subjects to attain a level of preparedness for professional practice and career development. In part, this is a response to the requirements of built environment professional institutions where the future practitioners are expected to have a fuller understanding and awareness of business and commercial matters and the enterprise characteristics of their chosen profession.

This module provides you with an opportunity to lead an investigation into an area of the Built Environment that is of interest to you. You will choose and define the topic, research relevant information (either primary or secondary), set that information in the context of an appropriate intellectual framework, draw relevant conclusions, and write up and submit the project in an approved format. A support lecture programme and an individual research supervisor are provided.

Advice on construction procurement and contract administration is a major responsibility that comes under the job profile of Quantity Surveyors. At the same time, procurement systems and contractual arrangements often have major influences over the strategies used to design and manage a given construction project. As such, it is important that the future Quantity Surveyors, Building Surveyors and Construction Project Managers have a deep insight of various construction procurement systems and standard form of contracts (JCT and NEC forms of contracts). Accordingly, this module introduces the principal types of procurement systems and associated standard form of contracts used in the UK construction market and internationally. In addition, it explores the fundamental procedures related to construction contract administration using the commonly used standard form of contracts.

This module explores the principles and practices of conserving and adapting buildings with a focus on sustainability and regulatory compliance. You’ll examine how buildings have evolved over time, discover strategies for retrofitting and refurbishment, and understand the essentials of maintenance management. You’ll gain insight into the legal frameworks and building regulations that shape conservation and restoration, while also considering environmental challenges and policy drivers for sustainability and net-zero goals. The module introduces sustainable design principles, project evaluation systems, and the impact of emerging technologies—equipping you with the knowledge to create effective conservation strategies that balance heritage, environmental responsibility, and commercial needs.
