This one-year top-up course is designed for students who already have a solid understanding in education, English or a related subject and want to progress into teaching English to speakers of other languages. You’ll build the theoretical knowledge and practical confidence needed to plan, deliver and evaluate effective English language teaching in a range of international contexts.

You’ll explore how people learn languages, how culture influences learning, and how to design inclusive, engaging lessons for diverse classrooms. Throughout the course, you’ll be encouraged to reflect critically on your own development as an educator, strengthening your professional practice and decision-making.

You’ll be taught by experienced academics with specialist expertise in TESOL, supported by a strong professional and academic network that informs course design and teaching. This ensures your learning is grounded in current research, policy and classroom practice, while preparing you for further study or professional opportunities in English language teaching worldwide.

Who can apply?

Entry Requirements

Entry requirements for this course are normally one of the following:

  • HND or equivalent
  • Foundation degree or 120 ECTS
  • Successful completion of two years higher education with 120 ECTS credits (or equivalent).

If your first language is not English, you will need to meet the minimum requirements of an English Language qualification. The minimum for IELTS is 6.0 overall with no element lower than 5.5, or equivalent. What will you learn?

Course Details

This module will help you to learn how to design and conduct a final year project. It does this by exploring a range of research and design approaches, strategies and methods. The module helps you to design a project that utilises your knowledge and abilities, carry it out and evaluate its outcomes. Your final year project will focus on an empirical research, policy or practice development, documentary research, policy analysis, entrepreneurship activity, or other options in negotiation with your tutor. The module guides you towards gaining a thorough, critical understanding of project planning and evaluation, research protocols, methods, ethics and ways of doing data analysis. By the end of the module you’ll be confident and capable of designing your own rigorous and valid project.

This module allows you to pursue your academic and work-related interests and to demonstrate the breadth of knowledge, understanding, and strengths that you have developed during your degree studies. You will review critical understanding of project planning and evaluation, research protocols, methods, ethics, and analysis. You will be supported in the selection of a focus for your final project, in the development of an application for ethical approval, and at each stage of your study. Your final year project will focus on an empirical research, policy or practice development, documentary research, policy analysis, entrepreneurship activity, or other options in negotiation with your tutor. This module is your opportunity to work together with a supervisor to confidently and rigorously undertake a valid project.

In this module you’ll focus on the theory and practice of English language teaching. You’ll have the opportunity to examine a range of methodologies and materials for the teaching of grammar and skills, from both a practical and theoretical perspective. As part of your assessment you’ll be required to plan and resource one lesson and write a reflective commentary and analytical report of the lesson plans.

This module will develop your understanding of the ways in which assessment contributes to learning and raises achievement. You will explore different methods and applications of assessment and the ways in which current practice changes to incorporate new or changed methods of assessment. The assessment task for this module takes the form of a single report evaluating resources and tools used for assessing learning in educational contexts.

This module develops your understanding of theories concerning counselling, coaching and mentoring. In doing so, it will improve your effectiveness in responding to and working with the needs of individuals in a variety of contexts. You will have an opportunity to develop your helping skills and evaluate the use of different helping approaches.

This module seeks to develop your understanding of theories of leadership, management and the organisation of professional practice. You’ll have the opportunity to explore relevant theory and practical factors such as mentoring arrangements, group structures, staff development and the leadership of change in professional practice. Assessment typically involves the development of an annotated bibliography and a poster presentation.

How much will it cost?

Fees and Finance

£10,050 per year

This information is for Home students applying to study at the University of Huddersfield in the academic year 2027/28.
