About the course

This is a course designed to meet the needs of students who have completed an undergraduate degree in a relevant area of business, accounting or finance. Whether you are planning a career with a major accounting firm in the UK, or in an international firm, this course helps prepare you for such roles by developing your understanding of the internationalisation of accounting.

The course will help enable you to develop critical insights, provide vocationally-relevant subject matter, and is focused on critical evaluation of financial regulation and transparency. We will explore topics such as international regulatory frameworks, the economic consequences of creative accounting, corporate governance and ethical matters that support good practice in corporate reporting. You’ll be taught by academics with professional qualifications and/or significant practitioner experience. Our focus is on using varied teaching and assessment methods to help develop a wide range of academic, analytical, presentation and practical skills in our students.

Teaching methods include; lectures, seminars, workshops, student-led discussions, group projects and presentations, case study analysis and advanced level accounting exercises, and e-learning.

Our strong connections with the financial world are demonstrated through our ‘Partners in Accountancy’ scheme, which links you with accountancy firms of national and international repute. You will be invited to guest lectures presented by experienced practitioners from the world of business. Recent guests have included KPMG and an Internal Auditor specialising in health insurance.

Potential employers are increasingly looking for students who have been educated to postgraduate level. A Master’s course may give you additional knowledge and skills, and allow you to specialise in a particular subject, if your undergraduate degree is more general.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements for this course are normally:

An Honours degree (2:2 or above) in Accountancy, Finance, Business or Economics. Or an appropriate professional qualification from a Consultive Committee of Accountancy Bodies (CCAB) approved professional accountancy body. Applicants with other professional qualifications and/or experience will be considered individually.

Course Detail

International Corporate Reporting Issues

This module will enable you to develop your knowledge of accounting to consider theoretical and conceptual underpinnings in the context of published financial statements for companies whose shares are traded on stock exchanges. This will involve developing and presenting an understanding of the key international accounting issues and the use of practical examples drawn from published financial statements using international accounting standards.

Accounting for Strategy and Management Control

This module examines management accounting theory and current practice in relation to strategy and contemporary management control systems. It will provide you with an advanced overview and a critical understanding of the context of the use of management accounting information and emphasises the role of this information in evaluating alternative futures to support the strategic positioning of an organisation in dynamic environments.

Corporate Governance

The central aim of this module is to enable students to gain a thorough grounding in a range of advanced topics in corporate governance. Specifically, the module seeks to introduce and develop students’ ability to critically evaluate a wide of range of concepts, principles, theories, models, systems, mechanisms, reforms, regulations and research in corporate governance.

Governing Risk: Ethics and Audit

This module develops critical awareness of policies practices and conceptual understanding of the governance of risk with ethics and through auditing in the field of finance. You will get the opportunity to develop critical awareness of the meaning of risk governance, audit and professional ethics.

Corporate Social Responsibility; Accountability and Reporting

This module aims to introduce key information and debatable issues in corporate social responsibility, social and environmental reporting and accountability from the business environment. This extends to the interpretation and application of non-financial data that presides within published statements and academic literature.

International Finance

This module considers the financial implications of multinational business that may arise because the world economy is made up of a number of distinct tax systems, economic systems, political regimes and currencies. The methods that national and multi-national firms may use to respond to such differences are also explored.

International Economics

This module builds on your knowledge of the fundamentals of globalisation, international trade and financial crises. You will have the opportunity to explore global economic downturns and consider the causes and consequences of such events both in the developed and developing economies. 

Research Design and Analysis

This module is designed to give you knowledge and understanding of the principles of social science research. It provides you with grounding in the principles of research design and the principal methods of data collection in the context of research in accounting and finance, all of which are necessary for a successful research proposal.

Dissertation

This module allows students to deepen their understanding of a particular area or accounting, finance or banking according to their own interests. It enables students to carry out a substantial piece of work in these fields of research and developing students' abilities to present research according to academic conventions.

Student support

Learning Development Group: Our Learning Development Group (LDG) provides academic support to all students within Huddersfield Business School. We have a dedicated team of 4 experienced academic skills tutors who have taught at all levels including Master’s who can work closely with you to help you achieve your full potential throughout your time at the University of Huddersfield.

We can help with a wide range of academic skills including referencing, academic writing (such as essays, reports and coursework), research, reading, note-taking, dissertations and presentations as well as all other skills and issues relating to academia. As well as this, we also offer advice on dyslexia and can provide information on accessing disability support.

The LDG also provides support for international students. We recognise that there are many differences between studying here and in your home country. This is why we have dedicated academic skills tutors who can help you with both your study as well as your language skills.

Finally, online help is also available. We have a dedicated YouTube channel which offers several videos on academic skills suitable for all levels and years of study.

International Student Development: We understand that settling into a new country and environment can be very stressful. So, if you are an international student, the International Student Development (ISD) team can help provide support in understanding and adapting to the UK Higher Education environment as well as settling into life in the UK.

In addition, we can also help you develop the essential academic skills needed to ensure you achieve your full potential throughout your time at Huddersfield. We provide help and guidance to students at all levels (both undergraduate and postgraduate) with timetabled academic skills sessions. These sessions are delivered in same-course groups by our experienced tutors. In addition, English language sessions are available at foundation, intermediate or upper intermediate level. The number of weekly sessions and support you receive will vary depending on the level you are currently working at.

Student Support & Guidance: Huddersfield Business School has a Student Support & Guidance service which aims to ensure that you are fully supported whilst studying here with us at The University of Huddersfield. They are able to offer you help, advice, support and guidance on a wide range of matters that may be having an impact on your general well-being or university life and studies.

The team can offer one to one pre-booked appointments or drop-In sessions to discuss or give advice on anything that concerns you which may include; attendance, disabilities,timetable Issues, welfare and any personal issues that may be impacting upon your studies.

Library services and online study support: Students at the University of Huddersfield have access to a wide range of study resources through the library and additional online study support resources. Our modern, professionally organised library provides a wide range of books, cds, dvds and additional online resources such as company reports, market research reports and academic and professional journal archives. At key times in the academic year the library is open 24-7 and our students also borrow laptops, reserve study rooms for group working and access computer software programs.

Our students have access to an extensive online virtual learning portal called Unilearn. This links our students with all the modules they are studying as well as academic support materials, reading lists, electronic documents, social media tools and assignment submission tools to support their studies.

The university has undertaken a large investment in lecture capture technology. Across the university many lectures are recorded and made available for students to watch afterwards. These recordings can help you develop your lecture notes, return to lecture material that you initially found difficult and offer a key revision aid.
