The maximum duration for a full-time MSc by Research is 1 year (12 months) with an optional submission pending (writing up period) of 4 months.

Sometimes it may be possible to mix periods of both full-time and part-time study.

The research degree

A Master's by Research (MSc) allows you to undertake a one year (full-time) research degree. It contains little or no formal taught component. This type of study gives you the chance to explore a research topic over a shorter time than a more in-depth doctoral programme.

Research Master's students choose a specific project to work on and have a greater degree of independence in their work than is the case with a taught Master's course.

You'll be expected to work to an approved programme which you will develop in conjunction with your supervisor within the first few months of starting your studies. Whilst undertaking the research project you will also have the opportunity to develop your research skills by taking part in training courses and events.

At the end of the project you write up your findings in the form of a short thesis of around 25,000 words, which will then be examined.

On successful completion, you will be awarded your degree and if you have enjoyed this taste of research you may then decide to apply for the full research doctoral degree (PhD).

Entry requirements

The normal entry requirements for enrolment on a MSc by Research is an upper second honours degree (2.1) from a UK university or a qualification of an equivalent standard, in a discipline appropriate to that of the proposed programme to be followed.

For applicants whose first language or language of instruction is not English you will need to meet the minimum requirements of an English Language qualification (the minimum of IELTS 6.5 overall with no element lower than 6.0, or equivalent will be considered acceptable).

What can I research?

Outline

There is scope to develop applied research projects in Women’s Football (soccer). Specific research questions are open to discussion between the supervisor and PhD student. Areas of interest include investigating match and training demands/loads, energy expenditure and energy intake, nutritional interventions, programming, and performance analysis.

We are particularly interested in candidates who are currently working in Women’s football, or have links to clubs.

Equations exist that can predict ankle strength in a healthy adult population but these have not been tested in for example older populations, specific sporting populations, in diabetic or CP patients. Exploration of some of these areas could be beneficial for rehabilitation and prevention of injury.

Guidance for the treatment of depression in young people recommended that qualitative research examined the experiences in the care pathway of children and young people and their families (and perhaps professionals) in order to inform decisions about what the most appropriate care pathway should be (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, 2005). The research is likely therefore to use a qualitative method. The focus could be on a particular group of people or type of mental illness, such as depression or anxiety.

People who use mental health services often have co-occurring substance use problems. However, mental health staff are not necessarily equipped to be able to manage this. This has lead to issues around clinical safety (management of intoxication; overdose) as well as other issues such as violence, exacerbation of mental health issues.
Studies could examine lived experience of substance use in mental health care; staff responses to substance use (therapeutic v punitive); staff attitudes to substance use; development of interventions to improve safety and decision-making in mental health nursing. Traditional methods of collecting dietary intake data, such as the 7-day food diary, can place a high responsibility and time burden on the participant and the researcher alike. When working with a sports team a nutritionist/dietician will likely work part-time (1-2 days a week), and will be expected to work with large numbers of athletes. The Montgomery cherry has received increased interest within recent literature for its potential as a nutritional recovery supplement following a bout of muscle damaging exercise. Generally these studies have investigated these potential effects within a lab setting and have loaded participants in the day(s) prior to the testing in addition to providing them with the supplement post-exercise. In real world settings, such as elite sport, a load prior to exercise may not be practical, and the supplement may only be taken post-game. Proposals around this emerging field would be welcomed.

Surgical site infection (SSI) continues to be a common and expensive complication of health care worldwide. In some countries the prevalence of MRSA bacteraemia and Clostridium difficile infections have fallen, following implementation of national guidelines, targets and root cause analysis. However, the corresponding incidence of SSIs has not fallen, and there are issues with varying definitions, comprehensiveness of surveillance and lack of compliance with evidence-based recommendations. This project will address these issues in two phases over a three-year period:
Phase 1 will consist of a questionnaire study to establish locally recorded incidence of SSI after elective femoro-popliteal bypass surgery, cancer colorectal surgery, hip and knee prosthetic surgery and Caesarean section by infection prevention and control teams in acute NHS Trusts in England. Definitions of SSI, and which care bundles and surveillance methods are being used will also be determined. An optimised care bundle and method of surveillance will be identified for use in Phase 2.

Phase 2 will be conducted in a single or multiple NHS Trusts, comprising a prospective observational study of patients undergoing specified groups of surgery undertaken over two consecutive 6-month periods. This will compare and evaluate SSI incidence and compliance with both the initial care bundle and the agreed care bundle; applying the results from Phase 1, including individual elements of the care bundles and in totality.

Further information

The teaching year normally starts in September with breaks at Christmas and Easter, finishing with a main examination/assessment period around May/June. Timetables are normally available one month before registration. You can study this course on a part-time basis but, as this is a full-time course, you may have to attend every day of the week.

Your course is made up of modules and each module is worth a number of credits. Each year you study modules to the value of 120 credits, adding up to 360 credits in total for a bachelor’s qualification. These credits can come from a combination of core, compulsory and optional modules but please note that optional modules may not run if we do not have enough students interested.

If you achieve 120 credits for the current stage you are at, you may progress to the next stage of your course, subject to any professional, statutory or regulatory body guidelines.
