About the course

You’ll extend your knowledge and understanding of the ideology and theory underpinning informal education with young people. You’ll have the opportunity to build your skills, specifically focusing on learning strategies, effective personal development, research and evaluation. You’ll be able to choose from a range of options to increase your performance in your work and/or professional practice and increase your confidence in your work and in working with others. The course provides a platform for research and evaluation and helps you apply high ethical standards in your practice and research.

You’ll be taught by an outstanding team of teachers; in fact we are ranked in the top ten for Education in the Guardian University Guide (2017) for the seventh consecutive year.

You’ll also have access to our extensive professional and academic network which feeds directly into course design and delivery and to excellent facilities and specialist equipment.

My on-going research and extensive experience in the field of youth work, ethnicity and the prevention of violent extremism has led me to publish books and articles, make TV and radio appearances and provide commentary to national newspapers to discuss my work. This side of my work and the professional network that I'm connected to are all of significant benefit to my students. It gives teaching a strong currency and relevance in today's society. Through my teaching on Youth Community and Guidance courses I'm also able to use and pass on my research findings directly to students; ensuring they are fully prepared for their work on placement and after graduation.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements for this course are normally:

  • An Honours degree (2:2 or above) or an equivalent professional qualification and 6 months experience in a professional role in informal education or a similar area

For applicants whose first language or language of instruction is not English you will need to meet the minimum requirements of an English Language qualification. The minimum of IELTS 6.0 overall with no element lower than 5.5, will be considered acceptable, or equivalent.

Course Detail

Critical Social Policy in Education and Public Services

This module will help you examine the historical, political and legislative developments leading to current national and local policy agendas relevant to those working in education and other public services. Emphasis will be placed on the relationship between theoretical perspectives and aspects of practice in a range of contexts such as early years, youth work, teaching, learning and development, health care, community work, family support and social care.

Dissertation

This module will deepen your knowledge and understanding of educational research. You'll learn about traditions of educational research; positivism, interpretism and action research and the strengths and challenges of carrying out research in these traditions. This module will provide you with the opportunity to carry out a piece of research based on a contemporary or work-related issue or problem.

On this course you’ll focus on learning strategies, effective personal development, research and evaluation. You’ll expand your knowledge of professional practice, how to effectively work and support others and explore how personal development can raise standards in learner achievements.

Our full-time MA course takes 12 months to complete.

We offer two starting points each year; either September or January.

On the full-time course some modules are taught in weekly seminars and workshops. Other modules are taught at Saturday Day Schools supported by weekday sessions. Preparation for your dissertation takes place during weekday sessions and you'll also use our Virtual Learning Environment and online library facilities which provide access to a wide range of high quality learning materials.

The course is assessed through course work: there are no timed tests or exams. The assessment on the course allows you to demonstrate your practical knowledge and skills alongside developing your critical and theoretical understanding of the subject. The assessment builds on your particular interests and context and is likely to have outcomes that will be of benefit to your professional life and to your employer.

You will be provided with guidance to help you develop your assignment work by module tutors and specialist learning support staff. For international students, we provide a weekly academic study skills support workshop to help you get the most from the main modules.

Feedback (usually written) is normally provided on all coursework submissions within three term time weeks – unless the submission was made towards the end of the session in which case feedback is available after the publication of results.

Further information

The teaching year normally starts in September with breaks at Christmas and Easter, finishing with a main examination/assessment period around May/June. Timetables are normally available one month before registration. You can study this course on a part-time basis but, as this is a full-time course, you may have to attend every day of the week.

Your course is made up of modules and each module is worth a number of credits. Each year you study modules to the value of 120 credits, adding up to 360 credits in total for a bachelor’s qualification. These credits can come from a combination of core, compulsory and optional modules but please note that optional modules may not run if we do not have enough students interested.

If you achieve 120 credits for the current stage you are at, you may progress to the next stage of your course, subject to any professional, statutory or regulatory body guidelines.
