About the course

This course is part of a suite of management courses which offer a wide and flexible range of options and is designed for students either continuing their management and business-related knowledge or, particularly, students from other non-business academic disciplines. As such, it’s an excellent opportunity for students, from a variety of backgrounds, to acquire awareness and insights into professional management principles and practice.

We will equip you with the necessary knowledge of key management areas such as marketing, finance, people management and strategy which are covered on all routes. In addition you will tailor your Master’s award to a specific specialism in Leadership through the following modules:

  • Ethical Leadership
  • Global Leadership and Change

Further specialisation and an opportunity to pursue an area of business management that interests you or which you are passionate about comes in your choice of project. You have a choice of two routes: Research Route or the Consultancy Route (subject to tutor approval).

You will engage with real-world business case studies that stretch your professional and leadership skills. Having a Master’s qualification indicates your capability to stand out from the crowd, as well as your commitment and dedication to study. Employers will value your learning experience and often entrust Postgraduate-qualified applicants with greater responsibilities.

Entry requirements

An Honours degree (2:2 or above) in any subject or an equivalent professional qualification. Applicants with other professional qualifications and/or experience will be considered individually.

Applicants whose first language or language of instruction is not English will need to meet the minimum requirements of an English Language qualification. The minimum of IELTS 6.0 overall with no element lower than 5.5, or equivalent will be considered acceptable.

In exceptional cases students with no appropriate qualifications but substantial work experience, who can demonstrate ability to benefit from postgraduate study, will be considered. Candidates’ suitability will be assessed to evaluate their application in line with the University’s Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning procedures.

Course Detail

Marketing Management

The module is structured to give you a theoretical and practical understanding of managerial marketing decision making. You will be introduced to general marketing concepts and the techniques and tools of market analysis required for developing and implementing effective marketing strategies.

Strategic Management

This module provides you with a substantial body of knowledge relating to the principles of strategic management in particular the two broad areas of techniques for analysing organisations and their environments and the identification of appropriate strategic choices. You will be encouraged to practice analyses and strategic designs throughout the delivery of the module.

Professional Skills

The module provides you with a theoretical framework for analysing your professional skills and reflect on your own strengths and weaknesses. This assessment will then form the baseline from which to develop a plan for your own professional development during their period of studies. You will need to demonstrate that you have developed new skills and competences over the duration of the module through a portfolio. 

Managing People in Organisations

Managing People in Organisations is an extremely practical module which introduces critically analyses and evaluates key elements of Human Resource Management and Organisational Behaviour to enable effective deployment of people within organisations. A strategic exploration of the global context within which people work and are managed is also carried out through a range of organisational behaviour concepts and theories.

Finance for Managers

This module enables you to develop an understanding of the purposes and uses of financial information, together with the ability to use quantitative skills to improve performance management and decision making within an organisation.

Ethical Leadership

This module considers business as a socially responsible activity through which improvement and sustainability are rooted in ethical awareness and action. Students consider what constitutes a responsible business, what the global impact of business is, and whether ethical businesses can be commercially successful whilst critically engaging their own values through reflexivity and a critically evaluative case analysis for assessment.

Global Leadership and Change

This module addresses the need to adapt to different international cultural perspectives and worldviews in the light of changing ideas. A topical and eclectic guest lecture series stretches your thinking and conversational skills leading to an individual assignment which assimilates the ideas received during the lecture programme. A written group assignment gives you the scope to identify important global concerns and develop new insights into leadership and change issues.

Research Methods and Techniques

This module is a designed to prepare you for your research. The module looks at how to choose your topic, how to research the current knowledge in your area of interest, and quantitative and qualitative research methods. The module is assessed through the completion of a literature review and proposal for your research paper or dissertation. You will be supported both by the module team and an individually assigned supervisor.

Research Paper

This module entails conceptualising, designing and conducting a piece of research using methods appropriate to your field of study. You will select a research topic which corresponds to your own particular interests and develop a more specialised knowledge and understanding of this area.

Final Project/Consultancy Route

Consultancy Skills

This module prepares you for the Applied Consultancy Project. It introduces the theory underpinning the process of consultancy in organisations. The module will analyse various models of consultancy and you will explore different stages in the consultancy cycle including: the purpose of consultancy in business context, project scoping and contracting, information gathering, analysis and report, action planning, implementation, review and exiting. You will also critically examine your own consultancy skills.

Applied Consultancy Project

The consultancy project provides the opportunity to engage in an applied consultancy project, normally investigation with a business sponsor and provide solutions to a commissioned business problem. Students teams will be expected to engage in the process of scoping the project with the business client, undertake the necessary information gathering, analyse the information and make recommendations. Such company problems may be of a strategic or operational nature, thus allowing you to draw on several disciplines in order to apply theory to current business practice.

In the Research Route, you can choose an area of research in a certain area that might be of personal interest and related to your subject area in Management with Hospitality. In the Consultancy Route, you will get engaged in a ‘real world’ project, normally with a business sponsor and provide solutions to a commissioned business problem. In the Consultancy Route you will work in small teams to engage in the process of scoping the project with the business client, undertake the necessary information gathering, analysing the information and make recommendations to the client.

Additional information

Exposure to various activities at the University of Huddersfield will enrich your knowledge and skills. An intensive induction pre-course workshop, which will be held in September and January, provides you with an in-depth insight into your course; helps promote an interactive environment between fellow students and meet with your tutors.

The core modules are generally taught and assessed using case studies in lectures and seminars and in some modules group project-based work. Tutors are experts in their field and with many having practical experience in industry and the professions which helps combine your academic knowledge with practical application. Many aspects of teaching and assessment are grounded in real life situations and, where possible, live projects are incorporated into the teaching. You will also get the opportunity to engage with professionals and consultant guest speakers who can talk about their own experience and provide their own inspirational perspectives.

Student support

Learning Development Group: Our Learning Development Group (LDG) provides academic support to all students within Huddersfield Business School. We have a dedicated team of 4 experienced academic skills tutors who have taught at all levels including Master’s who can work closely with you to help you achieve your full potential throughout your time at the University of Huddersfield.

We can help with a wide range of academic skills including referencing, academic writing (such as essays, reports and coursework), research, reading, note-taking, dissertations and presentations as well as all other skills and issues relating to academia. As well as this, we also offer advice on dyslexia and can provide information on accessing disability support.

The LDG also provides support for international students. We recognise that there are many differences between studying here and in your home country. This is why we have dedicated academic skills tutors who can help you with both your study as well as your language skills.

Finally, online help is also available. We have a dedicated YouTube channel which offers several videos on academic skills suitable for all levels and years of study.

International Student Development: We understand that settling into a new country and environment can be very stressful. So, if you are an international student, the International Student Development (ISD) team can help provide support in understanding and adapting to the UK Higher Education environment as well as settling into life in the UK.

In addition, we can also help you develop the essential academic skills needed to ensure you achieve your full potential throughout your time at Huddersfield. We provide help and guidance to students at all levels (both undergraduate and postgraduate) with timetabled academic skills sessions. These sessions are delivered in same-course groups by our experienced tutors. In addition, English language sessions are available at foundation, intermediate or upper intermediate level. The number of weekly sessions and support you receive will vary depending on the level you are currently working at.

Student Support & Guidance: Huddersfield Business School has a Student Support & Guidance service which aims to ensure that you are fully supported whilst studying here with us at The University of Huddersfield. They are able to offer you help, advice, support and guidance on a wide range of matters that may be having an impact on your general well-being or university life and studies.

The team can offer one to one pre-booked appointments or drop-In sessions to discuss or give advice on anything that concerns you which may include; attendance, disabilities,timetable Issues, welfare and any personal issues that may be impacting upon your studies.

Library services and online study support: Students at the University of Huddersfield have access to a wide range of study resources through the library and additional online study support resources. Our modern, professionally organisedlibraryprovides a wide range of books, cds, dvds and additional online resources such as company reports, market research reports and academic and professional journal archives. At key times in the academic year the library is open 24-7 and our students also borrow laptops, reserve study rooms for group working and access computer software programs.

Our students have access to an extensive online virtual learning portal called Unilearn. This links our students with all the modules they are studying as well as academic support materials, reading lists, electronic documents, social media tools and assignment submission tools to support their studies.

The university has undertaken a large investment in lecture capture technology. Across the university many lectures are recorded and made available for students to watch afterwards. These recordings can help you develop your lecture notes, return to lecture material that you initially found difficult and offer a key revision aid.

We review all optional modules each year and change them to reflect the expertise of our staff, current trends in research and as a result of student feedback. We will always ensure that you have a range of options to choose from and we will let students know in good time the options available for them to choose for the following year.

We will only change core modules for a course if it is necessary for us to do so, for example to maintain course accreditation. We will let you know about any such changes as soon as possible, usually before you begin the relevant academic year.
