About the course

This course has been designed to enhance your career as an engineering designer and aims to advance to positions in design management in a short period of time.

The course offers a balanced suite of modules that will explore technical deepening, technical broadening and management. In addition, you will undertake a substantial project that will allow you to develop your own particular interests within the broad area of mechanical engineering design.

You will have the opportunity to study in one of the most advanced precision engineering laboratories in the UK, with a range of ultraprecision surface measurement, coordinate measurement and machining equipment. You may have the opportunity in the Mechanical Science laboratory to access a range of mechanical test and analysis equipment, to enable fatigue, modal and thermal analysis.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements for this course are normally:

  • An Honours degree (2:2 or above) in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Engineering Systems or a closely related science subject area or an equivalent professional qualification.

You are also encouraged to apply if you have other qualifications and/or experience and can demonstrate that you are equipped with knowledge and skills equivalent to Honours degree level.

For applicants whose first language or language of instruction is not English you will need to meet the minimum requirements of an English Language qualification. The minimum of IELTS 6.0 overall with no element lower than 5.5, or equivalent will be considered acceptable.

Professional Development and Research Methods

This is an innovative module which delegates will find not only challenging but also very rewarding as it will extend the way they think about management excellence and research application. Through interactive module content, based upon the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence, you will be guided through the theory and practice of professional development and research. Through the use of a number of diagnostic instruments and application tools, you will be able to benchmark your leadership, teamwork and interpersonal skills, thereby providing a firm foundation for reflective career planning through portfolio development. On completion, you will be equipped to manage your career through to professional registration and have the ability to lead complex research projects. This activity will be supported by seminars led by experts in the field of research and development from academia and industry, prior to the delivery of equally weighted group and individual project assessments.

Applied Computer Aided Design

This module uses theory and practice with 3D modelling software to design a working gearbox from a range of applications such as automotive, marine and industrial. You will select a category and develop a design that is appropriate to your specific interest. The assignments are progressive, the first being the design of a suite of gearbox components followed by the assembly of a complete virtual unit, thus demonstrating your ability to design to a professional standard using a high level CAD package, such as Solidworks.

Advanced Static Analysis

This module aims to extend your knowledge of the scientific principles used in more advanced static analysis of mechanical components and systems and to understand the role that mathematical and computer based modelling plays in this type of analysis. The module allows you the opportunity to gain experience in the use of commercial analysis software to solve non-linear structural problems.

Advanced Dynamic Analysis

This module aims to combine theoretical and practical analysis of dynamic motion with a focus on noise, vibration and harshness (NVH). You’ll have the opportunity to study both vibration and control techniques with topics including vibration theory, mechanical control, forced vibration, resonance, Sdof (Single degree of Freedom) and MdoF (Multiple degrees of Freedom) systems and NVH applications.

Vehicle Aerodynamics and Air Management

This module combines the use of theoretical, experimental and computational tools to help you develop a thorough understanding of aerodynamic features associated with moving vehicles as well as air handling requirements. The module introduces you to various commercial computational fluid dynamics packages.

Project Management

This module aims to raise your understanding of the strategic, leadership and technical aspects of project management and their role in adding competitive advantage to any enterprise. Concepts and techniques for programme and project management are introduced, developed and applied, with the aid of industrially relevant case material. Focus is placed upon the need for competence of project planning and control, together with contemporary methodologies such as Prince2 and Agile techniques. Through the module you will gain a firm grounding in the principles, processes, tools and techniques that underpin project management, but also be encouraged to challenge traditional thinking in the field. Team-working and communication skills are developed by means of group activity. Extensive use is made of software for project management with assessment undertaken through an equally weighted group project and examination.

Development of Dimensional Measurement

The module combines the theory and practical application of metrology for dimensional measurement of manufactured components. The module reviews the basic principles of metrology including calibration, traceability and inter-changeability. You'll be supported in performing measurements and in analysing data during laboratory work and study contemporary instruments including laser interferometers and co-ordinate measurement machines (CMMs). The application of international standards and the propagation of uncertainty associated with practical measurement, in particular the effects of temperature, will be reviewed and the use of temperature measurement techniques such as thermal imaging will be covered.

New Product Development

To achieve advancements in the contemporary performance imperatives of quality, speed and price, enterprises need to constantly update their product portfolios. This module provides an overview and consolidation of the skills required to implement and manage the New Product Development (NPD) process within the context of a commercial enterprise. Emphasis is placed upon the evolution, development and exploitation of NPD strategies; together with consideration of innovation policies, models, culture and practice. Appropriate management methodologies are then introduced to assess new product ideas, determine feasibility, and define those products to achieve commercial gain. Module delivery is provided through formal lectures and extensive practical sessions, prior to the delivery of equally weighted group and individual project assessments.

Individual Project

The project provides the opportunity to undertake a major programme of advanced independent work. Where possible the project is carried out in collaboration with an industrial company and takes place at the company. A project supervisor is then allocated at the University who would check and confirm if the project is suitable for a Master's level course.

Additional information

Technical broadening within a module covering Finite Element Analysis and Dynamic Analysis is used to ensure that you are equipped to effectively study the more advanced analytical elements of the course. Further technical broadening is provided within modules covering Computer Aided Design and Air Management.

Building on this, Advanced Mechanical Analysis takes you much deeper into these subject areas. You should become equipped to undertake non-linear solid and complex dynamic and analysis using computer aided modelling techniques. Non-technical broadening is included in the course with the study of Project Management and New Product Development. This provides you with a good basis to undertake your project and a framework for your future career development.

Teaching and Assessment

The course is taught through lectures, tutorials, studio-based assignment work and lab-based research activities. Studio activity takes place in a dedicated design studio equipped with computer aided design and analysis workstations. The lab activities make use of industrial standard software and mechanical facilities.

Assessment reflects the emphasis of the course on the ability to apply knowledge and skills, and is linked to examination assignment, project work and research/laboratory activities.

18% of the study time on this course is spent in lectures, seminars, tutorials etc.

Feedback (usually written) is normally provided on all coursework submissions within three term time weeks – unless the submission was made towards the end of the session in which case feedback would be available on request after the formal publication of results.
