About the course

If you’ve got an undergraduate degree and are are striving to become a secondary school Chemistry teacher, then studying our PGCE Secondary Education with QTS (Science with Chemistry) will help you on your way. You’ll develop your subject specialist knowledge alongside hands-on classroom experience.

A significant amount of your learning will take place whilst on placement within one of our partnership schools.You’ll benefit from being able to observe experienced teachers, gain practical hands-on experience and mentoring to help you develop into an outstanding and successful teacher.

Chemistry is an exciting subject to teach and there are opportunities for well qualified chemistry teachers. It is a National Curriculum core subject and is taught throughout schools. The course will enable you to explore what it means to teach chemistry and develop ways in which you teach it. You will examine the best practice of chemistry teaching and use a range of teaching strategies to challenge and inform your students.

Successful completion of your PGCE course prepares you to start your first teaching year (NQT year) within a secondary school setting. Our course is designed to prepare you to teach pupils in the 11-16 age range.

The course is a one year postgraduate certificate in secondary education. The programme is divided into two main themes:

Initial Professional Development

You’ll have the opportunity to explore creative ways to interpret your knowledge into a language a child can understand. We help prepare you for the classroom, allowing you to develop your own thinking, teaching and subject knowledge base to a level which you can trial in your placements. Themes include educational psychology, how young people learn, behaviour management, assessment, inclusion, creative and innovative teaching methods and designing learning. You research theories of child development, gain a greater understanding of current professional issues in secondary schools and develop your own educational philosophy.

Chemistry Specialist Subject Pedagogy

Subject sessions provide you with an understanding of subject pedagogy in chemistry and generic science sessions offer you the opportunity to explore a wide range of issues such as 'practical aspects of science', assessment of science and literacy in science as well as the more practical considerations whilst teaching this subject. We help you to prepare for teaching all the sciences at Key Stage 3. We have a fully equipped science laboratory at the University to help develop your practice.

Placements


A key element of your studies and learning takes place whilst you’re on placement. You’ll undertake a number of compulsory placements as part of your programme, in fact you’ll spend around 120 days in at least two partner schools.

You’ll experience the wider role of a teacher in secondary education. You’ll have the support of both subject and professional mentors in schools who will help you to develop your practice through observations, planning meetings, weekly tutorials, reports and in-depth lesson evaluations. Your university tutor will visit you in school to guide, support and evaluate your progress. Our partnership schools are situated across the local area including Kirklees, Calderdale, Wakefield, Leeds, Bradford, and we’ll endeavour to place you in a convenient location.

What's surprised me is how quickly you get to teach - I did my school induction in week two, my placement started in week three and by week five I was preparing and teaching a lesson.

Entry requirements

  • An Honours degree in Science (2:2 or above). If you’ve got an overseas degree, we’ll need a full transcript of your award and details of the marking scheme used by the awarding institution.
  • Two Science A level passes at a minimum of grade C or equivalent, with one subject being Chemistry.
  • GCSE English and Maths at grade 4 or above, or grade C or above if awarded under the previous GCSE grading scheme.
  • We would like you to have as much experience as possible in a secondary school in preparation for the course. We will ask you to provide a school experience report completed by a teacher in a school where you have completed at least 5 days experience.
  • Offers will be subject to satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service enhanced disclosure check and trainees must not previously have been barred from teaching or working with children. We also ask you to complete a health declaration to ensure that you have the health and physical capacity to teach.
  • You must have passed the skills tests in literacy and numeracy before you start the course and we ask you to register for the tests before interview.
  • You must demonstrate that you can read effectively and are able to communicate clearly and accurately in Standard English.
  • You should provide two references. If you are about to graduate or have graduated within the past three years, one referee should be a university or college lecturer who can comment on your academic ability.

These are the usual entry requirements. We do however encourage those with different or older qualifications to apply as we welcome people from different backgrounds.

All conditions must be met by 31 August 2018.

Application to the PGCE via an SKE route: If your degree qualification does not meet our normal entrance requirements, you can apply and may be offered a place conditional on the successful completion of a Subject Knowledge Enhancement programme (SKE).

Entry Requirements for this are: A minimum of a 2.2 (Hons) Degree with some subject specific content linked to the subject you are applying to. (If you’ve got an overseas degree, we’ll need a full transcript of your award and details of the marking scheme used by the awarding institution). An A level (or equivalent) in the subject, normally at a grade C above. (For Biology/Chemistry/Physics applications, a second A level in one of the sciences would be required). * The ability to complete an SKE programme (this may be up to 28 weeks). All other entrance requirements remain the same.

Curriculum Development

This module provides a structured opportunity for you to develop the ability to plan sequences of lessons which support pupils’ learning and progress in the context of a curriculum subject. It seeks to introduce you to the principles of curriculum design, medium and short term planning and how to monitor and evaluate the impact on pupils’ learning. You'll choose a focus for your assignment which develops an understanding of subject pedagogy in relation to a particular curriculum topic; the use of equipment or technology to enhance teaching and learning; or the use of a particular teaching and learning strategy related to current educational research. Assessment is typically via the development of a theoretically underpinned unit of work, lesson plans and resources for a sequence of lessons and critically evaluating the impact of the chosen strategies on pupils’ learning.

Developing Critical Professional Practice in Secondary Education

This module seeks to develop your professional practice as a teacher and you'll undertake two sustained teaching placements in two schools. You'll learn a range of teaching and learning strategies informed by current research and gradually develop your independent practice through reflection, target setting and continual evaluation and refinement. You'll evaluate the impact of your teaching on pupils’ progress and engagement and demonstrate your ability to meet the Teachers’ Standards. Assessment is typically through the presentation of a portfolio of evidence against the standards and a synoptic critical evaluation demonstrating the impact of your teaching on the learners’ progress over time.

Inclusion, Equality and Diversity

This module seeks to introduce you to the barriers to inclusion and equality of opportunity that children and families may encounter and to the inclusive teaching and learning strategies informed by current research which are designed to overcome these. Working with your University tutor and subject/professional mentors during your school experience, you'll identify an appropriate case study for your assessment task which helps you to focus on one pertinent aspect of inclusion and demonstrate your impact on the learning and progress of a pupil or group of pupils through your developing inclusive practice.

Specialist Subject Development

This module seeks to examine the pedagogy and practice involved within the teaching of a specialist subject at two or more key stages within the 11-19 age range. The module addresses pedagogy and practice of teaching and learning informed by current research in your subject area and provides you with the opportunity to synthesise theory and practice during your teaching placement. You'll analyse policy and practice related to your subject within the secondary curriculum and be encouraged to further develop your subject knowledge, skills and understanding. Assessment is typically via the submission of a portfolio which may include a subject audit and development, a critical account of the places of your specialist subject in the curriculum and evidence demonstrating successful teaching in the specialist subject.

You’ll learn in small, friendly and supportive groups, designed to give you the confidence to succeed.

Course tutors are very experienced and supportive and you’ll have a personal tutor to support you through your studies. Teaching is through workshops, tutorials and lectures, some with guest speakers, and through group work with other teacher trainees from a variety of subject specialisms as well as specialist subject groups.

Three of the PGCE modules are at Masters level and afterwards you will have the opportunity to continue your studies further to complete a Masters in Education, supporting your NQT year and your early professional development.

Assessment is typically through the completion of a range of classroom activities, written assignments, reports, personal subject audits and the development of portfolios of evidence. There are no formal examinations and the assignments are carefully designed to help you to develop your teaching practice further.

Your module specification/course handbook will provide full details of the assessment criteria applying to your course.

Feedback (usually written) is normally provided on all coursework submissions within three term time weeks – unless the submission was made towards the end of the session in which case feedback would be available on request after the formal publication of results. Feedback on exam performance/final coursework is available on request after the publication of results.

We will always ensure that you have a range of options to choose from and we will let students know in good time the options available for them to choose for the following year.
