About the course

Money makes the world go round. And Economics helps you understand how it all works. It’s a fascinating subject that takes a wide variety of factors into account, and it could lead to an exciting career in all manner of industries too, in the private or public sector.

Economics is the science of decision making. It’s vital in situations where events like changes in the price level of goods or services, or changes in interest rates affect how decisions are made.

That’s why economists study how people, households, firms and governments allocate scarce resources to meet the needs of the population. By studying Economics, you’ll have the chance to understand global problems such as widespread poverty and inequality, high unemployment and rising pollution. You might also be able to tease out some of the solutions too.

The course aims to give you an in-depth study of microeconomics, which includes sector specific practices such as competition, regulation and intervention. You’ll also study macroeconomics, which focuses on the importance of aggregate consumption, investment, and what fuels economic growth.

During your studies you will be able to tailor your degree by choosing optional modules such as accounting and environmental policy. Throughout the course you will have the opportunity to study statistics, quantitative methods and econometrics. All of which could help equip you with the tools used by professional economists to analyse economic policies.

We don’t expect you to be fully versed in economics before your course begins, as we aim to build up your understanding from first principles. We’ll also be looking at how mathematic tools can be used to analyse economic decisions. So any mathematics is very much applied rather than pure.

A degree in Economics prepares students for a range of careers by equipping graduates with a diverse range of skills which are focused on real world application, from analysing how decisions are made by governments to analysing the behaviour of individuals. Economics is a varied subject which allows students to develop their own specific interests and teaching at the University of Huddersfield is provided by a group of academics with diverse backgrounds, reflecting the wide ranging appeal of the subject.

Placements


The course offers an optional one-year (48 weeks) work placement after the second year, in the UK or abroad.

Huddersfield Business School’s Placement Unit won the National Undergradute Employability (NUE) award in 2017 for ‘Best University Placement Service’ for their hard work and innovative ideas.

Our Placement Office works with national and international employers to ensure excellent work experience opportunities are available to you on sandwich courses as well as giving advice in areas such as interview skills and preparing CVs and covering letters.

Economics was perfect for me as there is so much creativity involved with the application of theory. It is so relevant to everyday life and most real world problems have an economic element, its great being able to understand the depth behind that. It opens many doors to potential careers.

In addition you must have GCSE Maths at grade 5 or above, or grade B or above if awarded under the previous GCSE grading scheme.

Core modules:

Introduction to Microeconomics

You'll explore economic concepts and theories through a critical consideration of current economic issues, problems and institutions that affect everyday life. You'll have the opportunity to apply economic concepts and theories in a range of contexts to understand individual, household, firm and government decisions, and come to appreciate their value and limitations in explaining real world phenomena.

Introduction to Macroeconomics

You'll explore concepts in macroeconomics that provide the basis for second year study of applied macroeconomics. You'll be supported to develop a basic level of mathematical analysis through application of related macroeconomics concepts, and to apply analytical skills based on macroeconomics theories to understand and explain various macroeconomic phenomena such as unemployment, recession and inflation.

Introductory Quantitative Economics

This module will introduce students to mathematical and statistical methods necessary for the study of economics. The main techniques applicable to the study of modern economic theory will be introduced and where appropriate linked to applied content. Mathematical techniques will be used to allow students to develop their understanding of economic theory. Statistical techniques will be used to allow greater understanding of economic data and applied economics. The module objective is for students to use quantitative techniques and gain an understanding of how these might be useful in theoretical and applied economics, as well as learning something about their limitations.

Accounting for Managers (Foundation)

This module introduces you to how financial information for businesses is prepared, presented and interpreted by internal and external users. As well as delivering theory and technical information, practical application is presented through worked examples, group working and discussions.

Introduction to Financial Services

This module provides a comprehensive introduction to the global financial markets, together with an overview of current developments. You’ll learn how the financial services sector channels investments and financial instruments around the world and have the opportunity to understand how individuals, corporations and countries raise and move funds around international markets and financial exchanges.

Creativity and Innovation for Business

This module is designed to stimulate creativity while exploring a wide range of variables that may affect creativity and innovation in organisations. This module is aimed to introduce you to the body of knowledge on creativity and innovation, helping you to develop basic skills for evaluating and applying it appropriately. The main approach is in utilising topical discussions, experiential exercises, and cases.

You will be taught through a series of lectures, seminars, tutorials, workshops, directed study, computer aided learning packages and case study analysis. Assessment will include exams, verbal presentations, MCQs, short answer questions, essays, group projects, reflective learning diaries, computer-based assessment and extended case studies.

19.33% of the study time on this course is spent in lectures, seminars, tutorials etc.

If you are concerned about adapting to study at university level, then our Learning Development Group, (LDG) based in the Huddersfield Business School building offers a dedicated service helping our students to improve their academic skills in areas such as presentations skills, time-management, academic reading, referencing or academic writing, research for essay preparation and how to prepare effectively for examinations.

Your module specification/course handbook will provide full details of the assessment criteria applying to your course.

Feedback (usually written) is normally provided on all coursework submissions within three term time weeks unless the submission was made towards the end of the session in which case feedback would be available on request after the formal publication of results. Feedback on exam performance/final coursework is available on request after the publication of results.

Further information

The teaching year normally starts in September with breaks at Christmas and Easter, finishing with a main examination/assessment period around May/June. Timetables are normally available one month before registration.

Your course is made up of modules and each module is worth a number of credits. Each year you study modules to the value of 120 credits, adding up to 360 credits in total for a bachelor’s qualification. These credits can come from a combination of core, compulsory and optional modules but please note that optional modules may not run if we do not have enough students interested.

If you achieve 120 credits for the current stage you are at, you may progress to the next stage of your course, subject to any professional, statutory or regulatory body guidelines.
