About the course

Everyone has times in their life when they may suffer from personal difficulties. Whether they’ve lost someone close, had an unpleasant experience or even come through illness, they may need to reach out for help and support. This course combines the theory of psychology with practical counselling approaches, helping you build the skills required to help people in need.

On the course we’ll take a research focus, looking at the theory and practice of counselling and psychology, all with an aim to help your personal development during the three years. Throughout the course you’ll be guided by specialists in subject areas like biopsychology, developmental psychology, personality and individual differences, and counselling psychology.

The course aims to give you a unique and invaluable insight into human behaviour. You should be able to use the skills that you’ve developed in a wide range of situations, careers or further study. We’ll look at the science of mind and behaviour, which is the Psychology side of the course, and also at the different types of counselling approaches. Cognitive behavioural therapy, person-centred, psychodynamic therapy and others – you’ll have the opportunity to explore a wide range of techniques.

You’ll also look at the importance of health and wellbeing in day-to-day life, and how to support other people in their everyday lives.

The facilities are designed to give you as much practical experience as possible. Our counselling labs are fitted with cameras and microphones, so you’ll be able to practise your skills by acting out scenarios, followed by detailed feedback on how you’re doing.

If you graduate with a Lower Second Class Honours or higher, you’ll be able to apply for Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership with the British Psychological Society (BPS). Previous graduates have gone on to work in a wide range of different sectors, including education, healthcare, research, marketing and human resources.*

Entry requirements

BBBat A Level

120 UCAS tariff points from a combination of Level 3 qualifications including a grade B in an A Level or a Distinction in a BTEC Subsidiary Diploma.

DDM in BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma

  • Pass Access to Higher Education Diploma with 45 Level 3 credits at Merit or above

In addition you must have Level 2 Maths or Numeracy or GCSE Maths at grade 4 or above, or grade C or above if awarded under the previous GCSE grading scheme.

If you were educated outside the UK, you are required to have International English Language Testing System (IELTS) at a score of 6.0 with a minimum score of 6.0 in writing and a minimum of 5.5 in any single component. If you have alternative qualifications or do not meet the IELTS requirement we also offer a range of Pre-Sessional English Programmes.

You may be eligible to gain accreditation for your prior learning towards this course.

We are willing to consider mature applicants with non-standard entry qualifications. We run a week-long summer course where students who lack the standard qualifications can be assessed on an essay and/or statistical exam, depending upon the degree course applied for. Course Detail

Core modules:

Introducing Counselling Skills and Process

You'll be introduced to a range of helping skills and qualities and to a structured model of helping. You'll have the opportunity to practise your helping skills and receive feedback from tutors and peers. Your knowledge of the helping skills/qualities, the helping model and your counselling skills development will be assessed through coursework in which you evaluate your skills development.

Introducing Counselling Theory

You'll be introduced to the main counselling theories (psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioural and person-centred) and explore how they relate to helping skills within the Egan model of helping. You'll explore the counselling theories using exercises and case studies in order to develop an understanding of the different approaches. Your understanding of the similarities and differences will be assessed through coursework focusing on at least two theories of counselling and your knowledge of the basic concepts and application to the Egan model through a multiple-choice test.

Child Development

You will study the major perspectives and methodologies in child development. The module focuses on applied settings such as education, the mental health system, the criminal justice system and the wider social world. You will consider how developmental concepts have influenced the work of professionals in understanding development. The module will also help you in your transition to studying at degree level. You will be assessed through three pieces of coursework. Study skills and knowledge of developmental theory will be assessed through the completion of portfolios. You will also produce a coursework assignment.

Introduction to Social Psychology and Personality

In this module you will study Personality and Social Psychology. The module addresses three important questions: 1. How do psychologists study personality? 2. How do psychologists study individual and group behaviours, such as attitudes and language? 3. Is Personality best understood as originating in constitutional or social factors? Your learning will be assessed through a multiple choice test and a two hour exam.

Introduction to Cognitive and Biological Psychology

You will be introduced to theoretical approaches and debates in cognitive and biological psychology, as well as analytical research skills using quantitative methods. You will carry out research in our laboratories to identify and explain internal mental processes and biological factors that underpin behaviour. You will be assessed through coursework, involving two practical reports and multiple choice tests.

Introduction to Quantitative and Qualitative Research Methods

This module will introduce you to research methods and data analysis in psychology. It will give you both theoretical understanding and practical skills, and covers key research issues, methods and data analysis in both quantitative and qualitative approaches. You will be assessed by both exam and coursework. There is a multiple choice exam in quantitative methods and data analysis and a write-up of qualitative data which is collected from an interview that you will carry out. You'll also gain experience as a participant in several research projects.

Increased confidence, effective communication and assertiveness skills, ability to work in teams, effectiveness in group leadership, presentations, research and relationship building are all key skills that you'll be supported to develop on this course.

Teaching and assessment

You will be taught through seminars, group work, laboratory experiments and lectures. Assessment will include coursework and examination. 15% of the study time on this course is spent in lectures, seminars, tutorials. Your module specification/course handbook will provide full details of the assessment criteria applying to your course.

Feedback (usually written) is normally provided on all coursework submissions within three term time weeks unless the submission was made towards the end of the session in which case feedback would be available on request after the formal publication of results. Feedback on exam performance/final coursework is available on request after the publication of results.

Further information

The teaching year normally starts in September with breaks at Christmas and Easter, finishing with a main examination/assessment period around May/June. Timetables are normally available one month before registration. You can study this course on a part-time basis but, as this is a full-time course, you may have to attend every day of the week.

Your course is made up of modules and each module is worth a number of credits. Each year you study modules to the value of 120 credits, adding up to 360 credits in total for a bachelor’s qualification. These credits can come from a combination of core, compulsory and optional modules but please note that optional modules may not run if we do not have enough students interested.

If you achieve 120 credits for the current stage you are at, you may progress to the next stage of your course, subject to any professional, statutory or regulatory body guidelines.
