The research degree
This innovative programme is a response to the growing need for professionals to differentiate themselves in the market place. Huddersfield Business School have developed a programme designed for busy senior managers to further develop both their critical thinking and research skills in the workplace. The programme comprises of a taught element followed by the production of a doctoral thesis.
The DPA is equivalent to the PhD but is centred around bridging the gap between your academic knowledge and professional practice. The programme retains emphasis on your own contribution to your organisation while enhancing your analytical and research skills.
Students receive a prestigious doctoral award and develop their skills to a very high level. The course encourages the application of sound theory and rigorous research to complex issues, and improves students’ strategic and reflective capabilities. The course develops students’ careers and offers them a USP, enabling them to apply for senior positions in organisations.

The first two years comprise taught elements focussing on research skills and reflective practice, culminating in a research proposal. These elements provide the building blocks that will be utilised in the third and fourth years.
The third and fourth years are devoted to the production of a doctoral thesis that makes an original contribution to knowledge. The thesis is accompanied by the preparation of a publishable journal article based on the findings within the thesis or the students learning journey. Students are also required to submit a personal impact statement that identifies an original contribution to their own practice.
The programme is delivered using an ‘action learning’ approach i.e. small groups of students working together to solve problems. These groups will meet once per month for 9 months of the year throughout the whole four years. Students will also be allocated an additional academic supervisor throughout the doctoral element. Supervisors are available for advice and feedback over and above the action learning sets.
A variety of assessment methods will be used. These include assignments, business cases, a publishable journal article, a personal impact statement and finally a doctoral thesis accompanied by a viva voce.
Entry requirements for this course are normally:
- Relevant Master's degree or equivalent or a relevant Postgraduate Diploma, a professional qualification in education and at least 3 years professional experience.

We will offer the skills training through a programme of blended learning to optimise the opportunity presented by advancing technologies as well as face-to-face workshops and courses. The University has subscribed to Epigeum, a programme of on-line research training support designed and managed by staff at Imperial College London which will be accessed via UniLearn, the university’s Virtual Learning Environment.
